Title: Shining light into brain tissues

Abstract: Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a well known neuroimaging techique that has been developed in the last twenty years. Instrumentation has evolved from early single-channel prototypes to modern multi-channel imagers and data analysis have been widely investigated to extract functional information and to localize cortical activity. Even more is on the way: image recontruction methods bring to Diffuse Optical Tomography (DOT) and multi-modality approaches leads to data fusion.

In this presentation, I will discuss the physical principles of fNIRS and the instrumentation developed at PoliMi, together with the evolution of data analysis we’ve been through, to show the audience what kind of information is possible to get by shining light into brain tissues.
