NATO ADVANCED RESEARCH WORKSHOP
TOWARDS THE FIRST SILICON LASER
Trento, 21-26 September 2002
Conference Centre Panorama in Sardagna (TN)

The main future challenge for silicon microphotonics is the demonstration of a silicon-based laser action to engineer a silicon laser. At the end of 2000 and during 2001 that many breakthroughs have been demonstrated showing that this field is very active and still promising.
The up to now principal approaches can be subdivided into the following categories:

Bulk silicon with extremely high non-radiative lifetime (PRL 84,22,5220,2000)

Silicon nanocrystals (Nature 408, 440, 2000)

Doping of silicon with rare earths ions (APL, 79,27,4568, 2001)

Direct band-gap group IV alloys and quantum confined Si or Ge or group IV alloy structures (Science 290, 2277, 2000)

New directions

It is then now the right time to make all the different people working in this field meet together to make the point about the present-day state of the art. Within the workshop, all the different approaches towards silicon lasers will be considered, discussed and accurately weighted to single out the most promising route and delineate strategically routes towards the first silicon laser device.

We invite all the interested people to join us!
