Abstract:
The McEliece cryptosystem is a code-based solution for public key cryptography which is gaining increasing interest from both practitioners and researchers, mainly due to its resistance to future attacks exploiting quantum computers. It also has very lightweight encryption and decryption procedures, which make it suitable for resource-limited and mobile applications.
However, a major issue of the McEliece cryptosystem is represented by the size of the public keys, which are considerably larger with respect to competing solutions.
The seminar will describe some variants of the original McEliece cryptosystem which are able to significantly reduce the public key size by using suitable families of codes, like low-density parity-check codes.
The most recent advances concerning these proposals and their cryptanalysis will be reviewed and discussed.
