Doctoral Programme
The SDSU proposes as a specific objective the formation of experts in the fields of philosophy, history, and cultural heritage.
These experts will be expected to have strong methodological and interdisciplinary skills that will allow them to obtain, through a variety of formative activities, total maturity and autonomy in their research and to build on new and make innovative contributions to the key areas of interest of the Department. The skills acquired during the program will give the doctoral students the instruments to cover highly qualified responsibilities in universities, academic institutions, and the private sector in the fields of communication, publishing, and management of museums, libraries, archives, and think tanks.

Specialized curricula
- 1st curriculum:
This focuses on the multiple aspects in which human beings and their environment interact, all of the manifestations that lead to the transformation of a territory from a natural to a human “landscape.” In particular, it highlights the collective memory expressed in documents and cultural products, artifacts, and traces of cultural presence: from archeology to iconography, from cartography to archiving, from art history to human geography. In this area, new technologies applied to humanistic sciences – both in and out of a laboratory – and the related quantitative methods are utilized.
 - 2nd curriculum
This focuses on research about the conditio humana, all dimensions of the human existence as developed over the course of prehistory and history, and more specifically about the rational, ethical, political, legal, symbolic-literary, aesthetic, and religious aspects that have characterized the evolution and the codification of the idea of person and community. Privileged, albeit not exclusive, instruments for this area of research are the classics of Western thought and civilization – from biblical, Greek, and Latin origins through the contemporary period – and any form of memory and self-representation that testifies the efforts of humanity to affirm its self awareness, its values, and its limits.
