Living in Rovereto
Useful links
Rovereto has almost 36.000 inhabitants. Its name means “Oak city”. It is located in an area where many peoples transitted, to continue to conquer the surrounding areas. Rovereto was under the Venetian rule in the XV century, when the local artesans learned the art of breeding silkworm and cultivating mulberry-trees, which both became fundamental elements for the future economic development. The economic flourising period was marked by cultural development, wth the opening of important salons, intellectual institutions, schools. In the XVIII century the Accademia degli Agiati and the Zandonai theatre were founded.
Even if the economic balance was compromised by the two world wars, the city again became an important manufacturing and industrial centre and in the 70’s it reached the top of its economic development.
Rovereto is a small but dynamic centre, rich in cultural initiatives and sports events of international level. The presence of MART- the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art - gave to the city a new cultural dimension. The Museum joined the Peace Bell – a symbol of solidarity and fraternity - the austere Castel Veneto, which hosts the Historic War Museum, and the beautiful historic centre with Venetian imprint.
The MART Museum and the Zandonai theatre (1782), the oldest theatre in the region, are located in corso Bettini, a street with beautiful eighteenth-century buildings and with some didactic and research premises of the University of Trento.
The many international events organized in Rovereto show the deep vocation of the city to represent a meeting point between the different cultures of the world. Among others, the activities of the MART Museum and the Oriente Occidente Festival.
