Types of language course
CIAL organises English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Chinese courses, as well as courses in Italian as a second language; all these courses are organised at different levels and last 50 “academic” hours (or 37.5 actual classroom hours).
The courses are held by qualified, native speaker teachers.
The language courses take place at the Language Centre (CIAL) and in the various University Faculties throughout the academic year. Some courses aim at developing general language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening), while others are more specific.

The courses are divided into three kinds:
• extensive and evening courses: two two-hour lessons per week for two and a half months (for Italian there are two lessons of three “academic” hours – or two and a quarter actual classroom hours – per week for two months)
• extensive blended courses (only for English): one two-hour lesson per week for two and a half months, integrated with an online interactive package of English courses (Macmillan English Campus)
• intensive courses: five lessons of three “academic” hours each – or two and a quarter actual classroom hours – per week from Monday to Friday for a month
In the “Download” section of the screen you can see:
- the Course Calendar which lists the various cycles of courses organised during the academic year;
- the Syllabus which gives details about the content of each course.
Students who pass the examination at the end of the course and have attended at least 75% of the lessons, can then move up to a higher level. Attendance certificates are issued by the CIAL Secretary’s Office.
Students who are enrolled on a course but who miss the first three lessons without informing CIAL are automatically excluded from the course.
The courses offered by CIAL can be viewed by clicking on the link "Course enrolment" in the box on the left of the screen.
