Placement tests: frequently asked questions
If I have never studied the language before do I still have to take the placement test?
No, you can enrol on the A1a course for beginners (except for English which starts at the A2 level).
What is the placement test?
The placement test allows students to see what language level corresponds to their abilities. The test is the same for all levels and is available for English, German, French, Spanish and Italian courses. The test is only available online and consists of multiple choice questions and short texts with blank spaces to fill in. Students will be assigned a language level according to their score.
How long does the test last? How long is it valid for?
The test lasts a maximum of 50 minutes and can be taken at any time up to the moment of enrolment (although it is advisable to take it some time in advance). The test is valid for six months.
Are the results of the test immediately available?
Yes, at the end of the test the computer will tell you what level course you can attend.
What can I do if the placement test page closes before I finish the test?
If you clicked on “submit” and “continue” at the end of the test, then the test has already been sent and cannot be changed.
If the page closed before you submitted the test, then it can be cancelled and you can take it again. However, you need to contact the CIAL Secretary’s Office to find out how to do this.
What can I do if my login name and password don’t work?
Contact the CIAL Secretary’s Office.
If I have already passed my Faculty language examination or have an international certificate such as PET, First Certificate etc., do I still have to take a placement test?
Yes, you should because if you haven’t studied the language for some time or if you have taken other courses since you did the examination you might be a higher or lower level than the examination.
