Examinations: frequently asked questions
Can I take the language examination for my Faculty without attending a CIAL course?
Yes, you can. CIAL courses are not compulsory and are simply there to help students reach the level they need to take their Faculty language examination.
What can I do to prepare for the Faculty language examination?
1. You are advised to take the online placement test which is available on the CIAL website to find out your language level and whether you need to do a course before you attempt the examination;
2. You can see the grammar and vocabulary that you need to know for the examination in the “syllabus” file - click on “Language Courses” and it is in the “download” section of the screen;
3. to find out more about the written examination:
- if the examination is computer-based you need to download the “Linee Guida Prova di Conoscenza Linguistica” (only available in Italian) from the CIAL website (click on “faculty language examinations” on the left of the screen) where you can try out an example of the B1 test
- if the examination is paper-based you can find a copy at the photocopy centre (“copisteria”) in your Faculty;
4. if you want to study by yourself, you can check the Trentino Library Catalogue (the CBT) to find out what material is available in different languages and at different levels at the main branch of the University Library which is on the floor below CIAL. In addition CIAL has a Self-Access Centre with 18 multimedia work stations, each of which has a monitor, satellite TV, a video player and a DVD player;
5. Teachers at CIAL have office hours during which they offer an advisory service for students who wish to start studying a foreign language by themselves or improve their knowledge of a language through self-study or find out more about how to study a language alone. Office hours can be found by clicking on “Self-study” on the left of the screen and then on “Office hours”.
What language certificates are recognized by the University of Trento?
Certificates recognized by the University of Trento for the Faculty language examinations, are listed under “Faculty Language Examinations” on the left of the screen. Then click on the “Linee Guida Prova di Conoscenza Linguistica” (only available in Italian) in the “download” section of the screen. If you have one of these certificates you should give it to the “Presidio Didattico” administrative office in your Faculty.
