Clinical Service

One of CeRiN’s objectives is to supply essential clinical services to the community.
Pathologies caused by neurological disorders, which may be vascular (thromboses, haemorrhages, malformations, aneurysms), degenerative (dementia, cerebral atrophy), inflammatory (encephalitis) or neoplastic (cerebral tumours), are those most frequently treated by CeRiN. CeRiN treats people with focal cerebral lesions in subacute or post-acute phase, who are in a stable medical condition and do not need to be treated in residential care facilities; people with focal cerebral lesions who have completed their course of post-acute rehabilitation; persons with suspected or confirmed degenerative pathologies; persons with incomplete development of their cognitive abilities.

Diagnostic services

The diagnostic services’ aims are to identify and quantify linguistic and cognitive disorders due to neurological lesions, and to evaluate the extent to which these affect the ability to communicate and to carry out day-to-day tasks autonomously. These assessments are also a mean of establishing whether rehabilitative treatment is possible and of identifying the criteria to be followed in carrying out that treatment.

The services which CeRiN supply are:

  • Specification of the cognitive disorder; epicrisis and overseeing of the therapeutic programme
  • Follow-up medical control upon termination of the cognitive rehabilitation course

A neurologist and a neuropsychologist are included in the team involved in diagnosis; one or two rehabilitation practitioners (speech and language therapist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist) may also be included.

Rehabilitation services

The rehabilitation services’ aims are to alleviate the linguistic and communication difficulties which people suffering neurological injury and associated motor deficits experience, to improve their capabilities in daily life, and to prevent complications arising from the non-use of the damaged function, thus avoiding the necessity for hospitalisation.

The services which CeRiN supply are:

  • Intensive individual neurocognitive rehabilitation treatment
  • Extensive individual neurocognitive rehabilitation treatment
  • Extensive group neurocognitive rehabilitation treatment

A neurologist, a neuropsychologist and one or more rehabilitation practitioners (speech and language therapist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist) are included in the team involved in rehabilitation.

The Centre initially carries out its activities with adult subjects and will extend its services to include infants and children with developmental cognitive disorders - an area in which the need for such services is in certain cases highly crucial.

Opening times

The CeRiN’s opening times are from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Services are provided in accordance with the procedures set out by the National Health Service (SSN), within the framework of the agreements between the Health Agency (APSS) of the Autonomous Province of Trento (PAT) and the University of Trento.

Formalities for accessing the services provided

The organisation provides services for the benefit of users resident in the province upon request by a neurological or physiatric specialist registered with the APSS or with the National Health Service. The organisation may provide services to users not residing in the PAT and registered with the SSN, where referral is authorised by the ASL (Local Health Service) in their place of residence.

Service costs

The CeRiN’s services fall within the scope of specialist out-patient care. Unless they are exempt, patients are therefore obliged to contribute to costs by payment of a ‘ticket’ in line with national provisions.
