We study how human and non-human brains organize information originating from different sensory-motor modalities into discrete meaningful categories of increasing levels of abstraction. Our approach is grounded in the combination of psychophysics, electrophysiology, brain imaging, neuropsychology, transcranial magnetic stimulation and cognitive modeling.

The applied aspect of our research includes the study of the neurocognitive factors which structure knowledge during development (e.g., learning number- or space-related concepts), in both normally developing children and in children with developmental disabilities (e.g., dyscalculia), with the longer-term aim of informing school and rehabilitation programs. We also study neurological diseases affecting conceptual knowledge (e.g., semantic dementia, dyscalculia).
