Subject/Main Goals We are preparing for the in-flight experimental campaign aboard LISA Pathfinder (LPF), aiming at demonstrating the geodesic motion of test masses, within the accuracy requested for the space gravitational wave detectors such as LISA. The campaign is made by a comprehensive menu of experiments with the goal of measuring within femto-g all the force effects that are perturbing the test mass from their space-time geodesic. The success of the campaign depends, within other things, on the performance of the data analysis software. In view of the mission operations, we are developing and testing special algorithms and a dedicated toolbox, to be employed during the in-flight experiment, and we are testing them on the data of the simulated experiments, and on the ground base instruments. At the end of this preparation phase, we will launch the mission and perform the actual in-orbit experiment.
The winner will be integrated in the team performing these experimental investigations, in particular with the responsibility for the space experiment, for which he/she will work on: development and testing of the algorithms needed for the data analysis, maintenance of the software instruments needed for the operations, and support to the activity of validation of the experiments, both with the end-to-end mission simulator, and with the lab torsion balances
Requirements
  • Doctoral degree in ICT, in Computer Science, In Electronic Engineering,  in Physics or in Mechatronics Engineering, awarded by an Italian university, or equivalent title obtained abroad
  • A experience in the field precision electronics measurements, and in the usage and characterization of measurement instrumentation
  • Professional knowledge of the English language
  • To have a professional-scientific CV in line with the research program descibed
Amount € 27.008,78 year
Duration 24 months ( renewable)

Subject/Main Goals The aim of the project is the study of particular (artificial) gauge fields  on the many-body properties of ultracold gases.
In particular the gas of Fermi gas with very high spin magnetization will be investigated. This can be considered the counterpart of fermionic superfluidity when gauge fields are present.

  • PhD in physics
  • A good knowledge and experience in the field of cold-gases with artificial gauge.

Subject/Main Goals We are opening a young post-doc position in physics for our research on geodesic motion of test-bodies for space-borne experiments in general relativity and specifically gravitational wave detection. Our approach is to investigate all the subtle physical effects that exert femto-g level forces on macroscopic bodies that would otherwise be in pure free-fall under the effect of gravity alone. These effects span a wide range of phenomena: fluctuation of surface electric dipoles, collisions with residual gas molecules in ultra high vacuum, photon collisions, Brownian motion, gravitational coupling to the environment, among others.
We approach the problem both with laboratory experiments, performed mostly with ultra-sensitive torsion balances, and with the development of ESA’s dedicated space mission LISA Pathfinder, for which we bear the principal investigator responsibility. This mission is at the forefront of research in experimental gravitational physics and aims to demonstrate a big leap in the sensitivity of space-time curvature measurement for gravitational experiments. The development of LISA Pathfinder is approaching completion with a launch in 2014. We are currently intensely preparing the extended menu of on-orbit experiments with true free motion of test-bodies in the space environment.
The post-doc we are looking for will be integrated in the team which is performing these investigations, with special responsibility for the space-borne experiment for which she/he will design particular experiments, develop the necessary algorithms to process the data, and test experiment design and algorithms both in lab with torsion balances and with the end-to-end simulator of the mission
Requirements
  • PhD in physics
  • Preference is given to candidates with experience in data analysis in experimental physics, and/or in commissioning of advanced ground- and space-based experiments, particularly in gravitational and small force measurements. In addition to a CV and list of publications, the candidates will be asked to include with their application a copy of their PhD thesis and to provide at least two references, who will be asked to write letters of evaluation.

Subject/Main Goals We are preparing for the in-flight experimental campaign on LISA Pathfinder (LPF) aimed at demonstrating geodesic motion of test-masses at the level of purity required by space-borne gravitational wave detectors like LISA. The campaign consists of an extended menu of experiments with the objective of measuring all force effects at femto-g level, that drag the test-masses out of their space-time geodesics. In preparation for the mission execution, these experiment are designed, theoretically analyzed to optimize accuracy, and simulated on the end-to end simulator of the mission with increasing level of representativeness.
