The Doctoral School in Physics is designed to train students to carry out autonomous, original, and rigorous scientific research, required for highly-qualified activities in a variety of work environments. The School offers a European doctoral qualification, according to the regulations laid down in the Declaration of the Confederation of EU Rectors' Conferences.
The school is of three-year duration and admission is by selection; research and study activities are envisaged, which include attending courses and seminars.
The Doctoral School is organized by the Physics Department.
The following local research institutions are partners of the Doctoral School, offering teaching and research support as well as sponsoring individual fellowships on specific research topics:
- MIS- FBK - Material and Microsystem Centre of the Fondazione "Bruno Kessler"
-
CeFSA - FBK - Condensed Matter Centre of the Fondazione "Bruno Kessler"
INO - CNR BEC - Research and Development Center on Bose Einstein Condensation - ECT* - European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas
- INFN - National Institute of Nuclear Physics
- IBF - CNR - Institute of Biophysics
- IFN-CNR - Institute for Photonics and Nanotechnologies
The main research activities of the Physics Department are internationally recognised, and cover the following scientific areas:
- Biophysics and biosignals
- Biorganic chemistry
- Physical science communication
- Atomic and molecular physics
- Experimental Gravitation and Low Temperature Physics
- Material science - IdEA (Hydrogen, Energy, Environment) Laboratory
- X-ray spectroscopy
- Disordered Systems
- Nanoscience
- Theoretical physics of fundamental interactions
- Theoretical nuclear and subnuclear physics
- Theoretical condensed matter physics
The Department of Physics offers all the students facilities such as personal computer, network connection, computing resources, use of the library, access to several other Department facilities. Each doctoral student is assigned to a scientific supervisor who is a staff member of the Department or one of the partner institutions, and is actively involved in his/her research group.
Scientific activity is stimulated by the numerous seminars and conferences regularly sponsored by the Department and the other local research institutions.
