Long term stay (over 90 days) - Non-Eu citizens

With a valid stay permit you can go back and forth from your country and you can circulate within the Schengen area up to a maximum of 90 days every six months for tourist reasons; nevertheless after 3 working days you must inform the competent Public Security Authority of your presence.

Make sure the border police make an exit stamp both on your passport and on the postal receipts. Transits in non-Schengen areas are allowed. Make sure if a transit visa is needed by contacting the foreign competent diplomatic Representation in Italy.

Your absence from Italy must not be longer than 6 months except for serious and proven reasons.

Before planning any travels outside the Schengen area you are advised to contact the foreign diplomatic representation in Italy in order to get the necessary information for the entry visa. Usually, beside health insurance coverage, return ticket and economic and housing guarantees, a valid Italian stay permit is necessary.

Travelling during if you are on a renewal process

In a renewal process of your stay permit, you can leave and re-enter Italy (also from different borders) without crossing any Schengen Countries by showing the postal receipts of the renewal application and the stay permit expired/going to expire.

PLEASE NOTICE:

  • At the appointment for the renewal of the stay permit, the Questura will keep the old stay permit, even if it is still valid. If you think you will need it since you have to leave and re-enter Italy in the following 50 days, you have to submit at the appointment a declaration that you can get from Welcome Office (from Monday to Friday from 10 to noon).

  • If you are a Non-EU student with a study stay-permit and want to join an exchange study program in a EU member state, for the renewal of your stay permit in Italy read the information given on the page Renewal.
