Bringing your family here
The reference institution for all family issues is the Provincial Immigration Informative Center Cinformi which will give you necessary information to activate the procedure once you are in Trento and you have already all documentation.
Here follows some primary information to know before coming to Trento.
Travelling with family
You have two options in order to have your husband/wife and child/children under 14 years old stay in Italy with you, provided your stay is of 1 year at least in case of family reunion ("ricongiungimento familiare") and you fulfil economic and housing requisites.
In both cases you have to find a private housing since the housing contract must be registered at Agenzia delle Entrate. The housing must have been declared suitable according to the local rules (2 pers. min35 sqmt and 1bedroom; 3 pers. min 50 sqmt and 2 bedrooms; 4pers. min 55 sqmt and 2 bedrooms).
CASE 1: Family cohesion (if you arrive to Trento together with your Family)
The steps to follow are:
- within 8 working days from the entry in the Schengen Area to Cinformi for the needed "declaration of presence" for turistic reasons;
-
and then, BEFORE the expiry date of the declaration of presence given by Cinformi, they will have to submit first to Cinformi for a check, then to Questura through Post Office all the documentation and requisites asked by Questura for conversion from tourist into "family cohesion" stay permit.
They will receive an appointment at the Immigration Office of Questura di Trento when they have to submit again all documentation in orginal and in copy (please ask Cinformi on the detailed documentation you have to submit).
PLEASE NOTE: the children have to be present in Questura both at the appointment for study reason and for the appointment for "coesione familiare".
For this first option you have COMPULSORILY to submit within the expiry date of the declaration of presence (which will be the same as the visa's, up to max 90 days) first to Cinformi Immigration Service for a check and then through Post Office to the Questura, the following documentation for the application of conversion from tourist into family stay permit:
- the marriage certificate OFFICIALLY translated into Italian AND legalized by the competent Italian Embassy/General Consulate or, in case your home country has signed the Aja Agreement with the "Apostille" stamp made by the competent Ministry both on the original and on the official translation into Italian;
- the birth certificates of your children OFFICIALLY translated into Italian AND legalized by the competent Italian Embassy/General Consulate or, in case your home country has signed the Aja Agreement with the "Apostille" stamp made by the competent Ministry both on the original and on the translation into Italian;
Official translations are the ones made in the Italian Embassies or by authorized translators but then legalized by the Italian Embassies or, in case of Aja Agreement with the "Apostille" stamp.
- proof that your family income is at least of euro 5.4240,90/year + the half of this amount/year for each family member you are going to invite;
- certificate stating your study programme's duration;
- your stay permit or receipts of application of it;
- housing contract registered at the Agenzia delle Entrate (only on private market is possible);
- certificate of housing suitability issued by Comune di Trento.
Dependent can be covered on payment by the Health Italian System only after the first 90 days of stay in Italy and under evidence they have applied for family stay permit so they should have a private health coverage for the first 90 days of stay.
More details in our health issues page.
Your spouse will not be able to work as long as she/he gets the stay permit for family reasons.
See in the file below "Guidelines for family cohesion", the list of needed documents and requisites to fulfil.
Check also any update in Cinformi website.
PLEASE NOTICE: WITHOUT THIS DOCUMENTATION NO FAMILY COHESION WILL BE POSSIBLE AND YOUR DEPENDENT WILL HAVE TO GO BACK AT THE EXPIRY OF THE TOURISTIC VISA (up to max 90 DAYS).
CASE 2: Family reunion (your family reaches you after you are already in Trento)
Advantages:
- you husband/wife is immediately covered by health insurance and can immediately work;
- they can immediately register in the Comune of Trento, whereby they can have access to public services available in Trento such as public school or day care for child dependants, and even subsidy to electricity, gas that you are using in you private accommodation.
Disadvantages:
- you do not travel together, the whole process requires from 3 to 6 months;
- application of nulla osta to be done on-line to Internal Affairs Ministry through Cinformi;
- application of stay permit for family reasons to be done at Commissariato del Governo.
See in the file below "Scheda Cinformi ricongiungimento familiare" the list of needed documents and requisites to fulfil
PLEASE NOTE: For the application of nulla osta you need to have the “residenza” in Trento. In order to obtain it you need to be in possession of the stay permit (which normally takes about 2 months). If you are in a stay permit renewal process you can take the “residenza” by showing the old stay permit and the renewal postal receipt.
If the child is under 14, you do not have to count him/her for the parameters for Comune. A declaration of hospitality from the owner, to be submitted to Questura together with the copy of the identity document of the owner (for the declaration see "Dichiarazione ospitalità minore 14 anni").
Travelling with your child only
Either the Embassy issues a "familiari al seguito" visa, or he/she comes with touristic visa or with no visa if your country is waived and once in Trento you inscribe him/her on your stay permit. The application must be done through Post Office for both of you.
Needed documents:
- the certificate of birth of your child officially translated into Italian and legalized by the competent Authority in your country; legalization or Aja Apostille must be both on the original version and on the translated version;
- declaration of consent from the spouse that he/she allows the child to travel with you. This declaration of consent also has to be officially translated into Italian and stamped by the General Consulate in your country.
