In order to apply for the Italan stay permit for study reasons, you must prove to have an health insurance coverage.
You can choose among:
a private health insurance (bought in your home country)
If you want to buy a private health insurance in your home country, make sure it covers emergences and the whole period of your stay in Italy.
Italian health insurance
You can enroll to the National Health System at the cost of 149.77 euro/calendar year (valid from January until December regardless the month you pay for it) through a postal bulletin, available at the Welcome Office.
If you are enrolled to the National system you can benefit from the same services as Italian citizens: you will be allocated for free a general practitioner (family doctor) and the costs for medical examinations, treatments and analyses will be cheaper. Hospitalization and surgery are for free.
PLEASE NOTE: If in the calendar year previous to the one in which you enrol to the Health Service you have got an income/revenue in Italy or abroad (different from scholarship or study grant), the amount to pay for the enrolment to the Health Service must be calculated according the document below "Amount due in case of revenue".
How to activate it

pay the postal bulletin of 149.77 euro at any postal office (see how to fill in the bulletin below and do not forget to specify the year of reference on all three parts of it, if the payment does not refer to the current year);

choose a doctor (a list of English-speaking doctors is available in the download box) in Trento or Rovereto;

fill in the three application forms available both at the Local Health Board and at the Welcome Office (see guidelines in the download box);

go to the Local Health Board in Trento or in Rovereto if you live in Rovereto together with identity document (I. D.);
- the three application forms:
- original of the receipt issued by the Post Office at the moment of the application of the stay permit (or stay permit, if you already have it);
- original of the receipt of payment of 149.77 euro;
- original certificate of enrolment to the University of Trento (for matriculated students printable from Esse3; for PhD students available at the Doctorate Office; for other categories, please ask the Welcome Office);
- your tax code.
IMPORTANT: the receipt of payment is not enough to prove to the Hospital that you are insured. A valid declaration (“attestato”) from the Local Health Board is compulsory to receive medical treatment.
Health insurance agreement between Italy and your home country (if any i.e. Italy-Brazil)
If you are entitled to health insurance in your country of origin and your home country has signed bilateral agreements with Italy, BEFORE leaving ask your health board for the specific form for the extension of the coverage from your country to Italy.
Once in Italy, this paper must be submitted to the Italian Health Board which will issue a confirmation of health coverage in Italy.

Ina Assitalia (private Italian health insurance)
- up to 6 months’ stay : 49.00 euro;
- from 6 to 12 months’ stay: 98.00 euro.
You have to pay at any Post Office to C/C 71270003, addressed to Assitalia Agenzia Generale di Roma, reporting your name and surname, as well as your address in Italy; “causale del pagamento” (reason of payment): ““copertura sanitaria per studenti non UE”.
After the payment, in order to qualify for this health coverage, you must apply for a declaration (‘attestato’) to the Local Health Board in Trento ( Viale Verona– Block C) or Rovereto (Via S.Giovanni Bosco), with the following documents:
- original of the payment receipt:
- certificate of enrolment to the University of Trento;
- original of the receipt issued by the Post Office at the moment of the application of the stay permit (or stay permit, if you already have it);
- valid passport.
PLEASE NOTE: the validity of your stay permit is related to your health insurance, as well as to your housing contract and university enrolment certificate.
If you submit to the Questura or Post Office the documentation for the stay permit application at the end of the year, you have to pay in advance the amount of € 149.77 for the following calendar year. Do not forget to submit to the Questura also the health insurance for the current year.
Remember to activate the new health insurance at the Local Health Board starting from the 1st January of the year of reference!
If you are here with your family
Your family members can be covered by the National Health Insurance.
Should you have already paid for you the bulletin of € 149.77, you can pay another bullettin of further € 237.57 and fill in each of the 3 parts of the bullettin with the following sentence at the section"causale”: versamento iscrizione volontaria al Servizio Sanitario Nazionale ad integrazione al pagamento di 149.77 euro di data xxx (put the date of the payment of the bulletin of € 149.77).
If not, you can pay immediatly a total amount of € 387.34 in order to cover them as well.
Attention: if your family members applied for a touristic visa and you have started the cohesion procedures once in Italy the Italian National Insurance can be activated only after the expiry date of the touristic visa/declaration of precence. During the first 90 days they must be covered by a private health insurance bought in your home country.
If your family members applied for a visa for family reason and you started the reunion procedures the National Health Insurance will be valid immediately.
