The double degree is an integrated study programme (also called joint study plan), established by two or more universities. It allows students to attend part of their university career at the University of Trento and another at a partner university, thus obtaining both the Italian and the foreign qualifications at the same time. Interested students may access the double degree programme only after passing the selection exams and according to the number of available places; the period they will spend abroad may vary from 2 to 4 semesters, depending on the agreements signed with partner universities; the double degree programme involves the undergraduate level, the graduate level or even for both. Students shall pursue a specific study plan, in line with the decisions taken by reference lecturers at partner universities.
Since 1997 the University of Trento has activated 31 double degree agreements with foreign universities, involving all seven Faculties of the University of Trento. Germany was initially the preferred partner chosen by the University of Trento because of its close geographical position and considering the intense economic and cultural relations between the two countries. Currently all Faculties of the University of Trento include one or two German destinations. Austria, China, Croatia, France, Portugal, Oland, Spain, Czech Republic e United States (per Atlantis) became involved in the programme at a later stage.
The programme aims at bringing different university systems closer, respecting the different national education modalities which are considered as a source of mutual enrichment. The programme pursues three main aims:
- diversification of the education;
- quality learning of a foreign language;
- deeper understanding of a different nation and culture.
