The Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Trento, in collaboration with AssoInge – Association of Italian Engineers Abroad, organizes the Workshop "Engineering trends and business opportunities for smart cities" (Asso2016-TN); the event will take place at the Department of Sociology and Social Research of the University of Trento, from September 13 to September 14, 2016.

News

September 1, 2016 On-line registrations are closed.
On-site registrations can be performed ONLY by cash at the acceptance desk during the workshop. Credit cards, cheques, wire transfers and debit cards CANNOT be accepted.

Rationale of the event

Public administrations, companies and citizens are looking for the best policies and technologies to address crucial issues and threats for the modern globalized world, while ensuring social cohesion, environmental sustainability and economic profitability.

Due to their high complexity, such general problems have to be approached from different and complementary perspectives, possibly involving experts from public administration, industry, universities and research centers.

The conceived solutions promote the evolution of the so-called smart cities.

Purposes

The goal of this Workshop is to highlight some basic issues in the wide area of smart cities. The focus of the Workshop will be not only on aspects involving new technologies, but also on the economic, social and cultural issues, all heavily involved in sustainable development and responsible exploitation of natural resources.

In this context, ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and specifically IoT (Internet of Things) is expected to play a key role, enabling fact-based decision-making procedures in many critical sectors such as energy monitoring, environment management, home and building automation, possibly with an active participation of citizens.

On the other hand, some unsolved threats, like cyber security and privacy, become increasingly critical especially when sensitive infrastructures (e.g. industrial plants, power distribution systems, hospitals and data centers) are involved. However, a conscious use of new technologies might provide valuable solutions also to address these issues.

Contributions and target audience

The Workshop is open to the contribution and participation of researchers, professionals, managers, institutions’ representatives, post-doc and Ph.D. students. The conclusive session is open also to M.S. students.

How to participate

To participate to the Workshop it is required to fill a on-line form; on-line registrations are now closed (registration deadline: September 1, 2016, 12:00 AM, Italian time).

About AssoInge

ASSOINGE, the Italian Engineers Abroad Association is active since 2012. It is a no-profit organization which links professionals from several industries and promotes networking and professional knowledge sharing. It builds bridges between various industries and the research institutes (including universities) to contribute to both scientific innovation and business opportunities. It includes (not limited to) Italian professionals from all over the world and it is registered in the Netherlands.

The Association promotes the professional networking among engineers and scientists worldwide. The goal is to understand the trends and the opportunities in established as well as new frontier technology areas. This is to bring together ‘supply and demand’ from Industry, Public and Reasearch sectors and stimulate growth.

To deliver this mission, the Association organizes networking events. In particular the chosen format of bi-yearly workshop hosted at the most prominent research and university centers in Italy aims to reach a selected number of participants to allow a more in depth interaction towards the analysis of solutions and opportunities and ultimately to create a network of excellence.

At the same time the Association realizes that opportunities for innovation and growth never last without an established cultural  contest. Skills and intelligence are formed around a tradition, around the relationship with a cultural heritage, embodied in a collaborative environment and generally kept alive by an adequate educational system. That is why it it interest of the Association to have open channel with European Institutions as well as to promote opportunities for training and placement of students and graduates.

As Roberto Vacca said at one of our events, the critical vulnerability of the current economy and socio-cultural contest "call for substantive integrated actions of engineers, experts, decision makers networking in Italy and abroad."

In the past event the Association has linked professionals from Energy and Chemicals sectors with Researchers dedicated to nanotechnologies, efficientcy improvement, material technologies, vulnerability of complex systems and so on. This year themes like IoT, Smart cities, ICT and security will be the areaa we will focus on in order to enrich our netwrok.

The 2016 workshop on Smart cities and systems represents, thanks to University of Trento, the perfect opportunity to increase this netweork of excellence and reinforce it.
