The research carried out at the Nanoscience laboratory (about 25 people) concerns Nanophotonics, characterization of nanostructured materialsand  and Nanobiotechnologies. Photonics at the nanoscale allows understanding new phenomena which could bring up new devices. Nanocrystalline semiconductors are studied to enable new functionalites such as amplifiers and lasers. Integrated silicon photonics with emphases on optical switches, modulators and optical gates is one of the research line of the lab. New functional materials, such as ionic compounds or semiconductors, are key to innovative applications in energetic, micro and optoelectronics. Among the various materials, nanostructured materials with properties which are critical depending on their structures are basics to these developments. Since a few years, we are performing an experimental activity on nanostructured composite.

 

Helios

HELIOS (pHotonics ELectronics functional Integration on CMOS) is a project funded by the European Commission (FP7-ICTprogram). The aim of the project is to combine a photonic layer with a CMOS circuit by different innovative means, using microelectronics fabrication processes. HELIOS will gather the major European CMOS Photonics and Electronics players and potential users. It will drive the European RTD in CMOS Photonics and pave the way for industrial development.

CEA - LETI

CEA-LETI is one of the major European research centres for applied electronics. More than 85% of its activity is dedicated to research finalised with external partners. Nearly 1,600 men and women are serving innovation and the transfer of technology in key domains.

GDR Ondes

Groupement de Recherche CNRS - ONDES created in 2002 aims at being the "common house" of all experts of electromagnetic, photonics and acoustics. GDR ONDES in so doing covers all research fields, beyond disciplinary barriers, in "Waves". Topics go from the most abstract mathematics of waves, to sophisticate modeling and simulation issues, to high-performance computations, to elaborated technological developments. By its main vocation of scientific animation, GDR ONDES obviously is to foster the emergence of novel ideas and cross-boundary themes, those being often recognized at the most fruitful. GDR ONDES strongly wishes also to contribute to valorisation and transfer towards industry.

IFN

The Institute for Photonics and Nanotechnologies (IFN) was established upon unification of three former CNR research institutions active in the fields of nanotechnologies, materials and devices for photonics and electronics. The main aim of IFN is the study and fabrication of advanced devices for photonics, optoelectronics and electronics. Nanotechnologies play a prominent role in these research fields. The combined expertise in nanofabrication, materials and photonics creates a synergy able to compete in this very new and challenging field.

The Department of Materials and Devices (DMD)

The Department of Materials and Devices (DMD) is one of the 11 Departments of the scientific network of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). It coordinates the activities of 12 Institutes, spread over the whole national territory. The overall goals of the Department include both the development of scientific thematic at the edge of knowledge and technological applications with significant economical outcomes. Topics include investigations on the traditional structure of matter and quantum optics-electronics (both theoretical and experimental) as well as interdisciplinary activities, exploiting the same methodologies and devices in different domains, such as biology, computer science, production systems and cultural heritage.

PhotonFAB

The PhotonFAB project is supported by the European Union through the Seventh Research Framework Programme FP7. PhotonFAB is a Support Action, supporting research and development in Europe by significantly gearing up the silicon photonic IC prototyping service of ePIXfab, with an improved technology portfolio and design kits, user training, a more streamlined operation, and an access roadmap. The project supports academic researchers, SMEs, FP7 funded research projects and nationally funded research projects.

FBK

Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) is a research organization of the Autonomous Province of Trento that promotes research in the areas of science, technology, and humanities. Thanks to a close network of alliances and collaborations, FBK also conducts research in theoretical nuclear physics, networking and telecommunications, and social sciences (studies of public policy effectiveness).
The objectives of the foundation are to conduct research that obtains recognition at an international level, to carry out applied research of strategic importance to the province, to publicize scientific results and promote economic development and to encourage innovation throughout the province.

The activities of TSA in the field of optical links and microwave optics dates back from 20 years, and covered laser diodes design and fabrication, microwave distributed photodetectors, external LiNbO3 and MQW modulators, to list a few of the developments undergone. The main line of action of the company in this field today is concentrating on high performance analogue and digital optical links to be used with highly integrated T/R modules applicable to future active antennas. The target is the realization and production of the smallest optically interfaced T/R modules, for which the CMOS based technology help drastically shrink both the dimensions of the modules and their electrical interconnection with the outside world, thereby easing their insertion in future conformal antennas.

GCOE

In April 2007, “Photonics and Electronics Science and Engineering Center, PESEC” has just been inaugurated at Kyoto University in order to become a platform of the COE (center of excellence) program. This center includes three research groups: “arbitrary control photonics group”, “ultimate control electronics group”, and “fundamental physics group”.
The objective of the present program is to form an international education and research center for “photonics and electronics science and engineering”, to investigate and develop innovative technologies, by which an arbitrary manipulation of photons (light) and an ultimate control of electrons will be achieved, as we hold the motto of “challenge the limitations of current technology and create new functionalities”.
Another very important mission of the proposed COE program is the education of the next generation of researchers. The COE  plans to train highly competent young researchers destined for both academia and industry, inside and outside of Japan. In particular, self-reliant young researchers with strong leadership and international minds are expected to develop next-generation technologies. Therefore, the enhancement of the education of these young researchers will be one of the most important missions of the proposed COE program.
