International Summer School in Qualitative Research Methods in Education - Advanced Grounded Theory - III edition

The Department of Cognitive and Education Sciences, University of Trento, is hosting the 3rd International Summer School in Qualitative Research Methods in Education, this year focused on Advanced Grounded Theory.

The Summer School will take place in Rovereto, Trento from June 25th to 28th under the scientific coordination of prof. Massimiliano Tarozzi and with the internationally renowned faculty of Juliet Corbin and Janice Morse.

The program include lectures as well as hands-on laboratory sessions in a cross-cultural learning environment and gives students the opportunity to discuss their own researches.

The course provides a high-quality academic training in data analysis strategies, abstraction and theory construction from data, guiding the students to explore the wide-range of the Grounded Theory Method.

Faculty 

Juliet Corbin

 

She worked as a research associate doing grounded theory research with Dr. Anselm Strauss for 15 years. She holds a position as senior scientist at the International Institute for Qualitative Methodology, University of Alberta, Canada and was for a time a visiting professor at Salford University, Manchester England. She has presented keynote addresses and done workshops on grounded theory methodology internationally.

Janice Morse

 Janice M. Morse, PhD (Nurs), PhD (Anthro), FAAN, is a professor and presidential endowed chair at the University of Utah College of Nursing, and professor emeritus, University of Alberta, Canada. 

She is the author of 460 articles and book chapters and 19 books on qualitative research methods, suffering, comforting, and patient falls.

Massimiliano Tarozzi 

Massimiliano Tarozzi is currently associate professor of Qualitative Research Methods and Sociology of Education at Faculty of Cognitive Science, University of Trento, Italy. In his department he is also coordinator of qualitative research methods area of PhD School in Cognitive Sciences. He has taught seminars on Grounded theory in several at PhD schools.

At the end of the Summer School students will:

  • know different approaches to Grounded Theory data analysis in educational research;
  • be able to conduct a rigorous data analysis according to Grounded Theory Method;
  • understand and manage issues about abstraction and theory construction, getting autonomy in theorizing from data.

The Summer School will take place in Rovereto, Trento; lessons will be held at Department of Cognitive and Education Sciences from 9 to 13 and from 14 to 16.

  • PhD students or Ph.D holders may apply. Other graduate students may be considered for admission.
  • The working language of the course is English
  • The first payment is due by May 15th, 2012
  • Cost covers all tuition, meals, all course materials, including reading materials, internet connection, database online access, and some social activities

Evaluation criteria:

Participants will be considered by their CV, qualifications and the personal statement. At least 2/5 of the participants must be either members of foreign institutions or foreign or members of Italian institutions.

Fee:

The cost of the summer school is 280 € to be paid in two rates. The first one is due on the 31st of May and the second one is due at the time of arrival in Italy. Course fees include the following: tuition, all course materials including reading materials, meals (only lunch), some social activities, availability of the structures of the Department of Cognitive and Education Sciences and the access to online services and resources (wireless).

  • Dr. Luca Ghirotto, Ph.D. in Cognitive Sciences and Education, at University of Trento where is e-tutor for Qualitative Research Methodology courses. Area of expertise: educational research: early childhood learning and education; Social Justice Education; qualitative research methods and CAQDAS;
  • Dr. Francesca Rapanà, Ph.D. in Cognitive Sciences and Education, at University of Trento, where is collaborator of Teacher Training Center in Rovereto. Area of expertise: educational research: intercultural education; migration Issues; citizenship education; qualitative research methods.
