Industrial Problem Solving with Physics July 18 - 23, 2016 Trento (Italy)

IPSP2016: a unique sharing opportunity and a great growing experience for young researchers and companies.

Industrial Problem Solving with Physics 2016 (IPSP2016) is a one-week event organized by the Department of Physics, the Doctoral School in Physics and the Research and Technology Transfer Support Division of the University of Trento, in collaboration with Confindustria Trento and  Polo Meccatronica - Trentino Sviluppo. The aim of this event is to boost the connection between University and industry. Young and motivated researchers will have the chance to prove their skills, while selected companies will experience the unique opportunity to collaborate with young and talented brains.

The third edition of IPSP (year 2016) will take place from July 18 to  July 23, 2016, at the Polo scientifico e tecnologico "Fabio Ferrari" (Povo 2 Building), via Sommarive 9 - Povo, Trento (Italy).

How does IPSP work?

3 companies and 30 brains (master course students, PhD students and fellow researchers) will be selected and will work together to find solutions to practical industrial problems that need to be fixed by the participating companies. Solutions will be achieved through inspiration, resources and facilities available at the Department of Physics.
IPSP aims at creating a bridge for the transfer of technological knowledge and human resources between the University, in particular the Department of Physics, and companies. Students and researchers participating in the event will have the opportunity to tackle new practical challenges, crossing more than one area of their scientific background. Participating companies can obtain a solution to their problems and experience an alternative approach about how to reach their goals. At the same time, they will have the chance to scout young and talented people for future collaborations.

IPSP: sharing results of IPSP2016 and launch of IPSP2017

On March 29, 2017 at the Electronic Laboratory of the Department of Physics, the results of IPSP2016 were disclosed (click here to go to the proceedings). Following tradition, the event offered the chance to launch the new edition as well.

Special attendees of the event, in addition to the Scientific committees of the former editions since 2014, were the Rector Paolo Collini, the Dean of the Department of Physics Lorenzo Pavesi, some representatives of IPSP’s institutional partners (Luca Arighi President of Sezione Metalmeccanica di Confindustria Trento and Flavio Tosi President of Trentino Sviluppo) and some IPSP2016 participants both of brains and companies (Arconvert, Bonfiglioli Mechatronic Research, Eurotex Filati, Saint-Gobain Sepr Italia).

Ready to rise to the IPSP2017 challenge, many new brains and companies took part in the event.

Companies application and registration

The guidelines for companies interested in participating in the event IPSP2016 are described in the Call for application - companies (available in the Download box).

In the Download box are also available some examples of problems and the final report about the previous edition; the report includes a brief description of the participating companies, the problems and the solutions.

The procedure for taking part in IPSP2016 is divided into two phases.

1. Application submission (deadline May 19, 2016)
Companies have to submit their application via e-mail to ipsp2016@unitn.it. A memorandum summarizing all the documents required to complete the application submission is available in the Download box ("Application notes for companies").

The submission deadline is May 19, 2016 at 13:00 pm. The applications received after the deadline will not be considered valid.

2. Registration and fee payment (deadline June 30, 2016)
The selected companies will receive an e-mail with the instructions to pay the fee and to complete the registration procedure.
The registration fee for companies is set to euro 600,00 and include the participant kit (notebook, pen, badge, etc.), coffee breaks and social lunches organized for the event.

The deadline for the fee payment and the registration is June 30, 2016

Selected companies

The call for the selection of the companies taking part in IPSP2016 is now closed and, among the 14 submitted problems, the ones from the following companies have been selected:

  • Bonfiglioli Mechatronic Research Spa, which is looking for a study about the modifications that different cutting processes (laser or punching) cause in the magnetic properties of the metal plates making up for the active parts of electric engines;
  • Arconvert Spa, producing self-adhesive materials. They propose studying and optimizing geometry of the reverse gravure system used for spreading the adhesive material on the paper substrate;
  • Sepr Italia Spa, which produces refractory ceramic products. Sepr's problem involves the estimation of the cooling times of ceramic pieces having different sizes and shapes;
  • Eurotex Filati Srl, asking to calculate the variations of the breaking load of yarns due to the different processes the manufacturing requires.

Brains application and registration
