Introduction

The Doctoral Program in Cognitive and Brain Sciences engages students in an integrated program of research, instruction, and professional development in cognitive neuroscience, experimental psychology (animal cognition, attention, brain asymmetry, perception, reasoning, language, memory, sensory processing), experimental physics, computer science, linguistics and cognitive neuropsychology. Students actively participate in international research projects, seminars, and conferences based in the Center for Mind/Brain Sciences, which includes the Laboratories of Functional Neuroimaging (LNIF), Animal Cognition and Neuroscience (ACN Lab), the CIMeC Language, Interaction and Computation Lab (CLIC), the Experimental Psychology Laboratories (EPL), and the Neuropsychology Lab (NPL). The length of the program is four years and its official language is English.

The Doctorate allows students to acquire the skills necessary to conduct advanced research on issues ranging from the main areas of cognitive neuroscience, a thorough knowledge of at least one specific field of inquiry, a general theoretical training as well as practical training related to use of the techniques and methodologies of neuroscience reserach as well as issues related to the nature, the representation, and the 'processing' of human language, investigated by means  of computational, neuropsychological, and theoretical linguistics techniques. Training professionals with high-profile skills in reserach in cognitive neuroscience through the creation of a research program lasting four years, combined with educational activities, group discussions and supervision, the curriculum promotes the growth of future researchers capable of carrying out cognitively valid investigations.

The main areas of research focused on at the CIMeC are:

  • Action and intention understanding
  • Animal cognition
  • Cognition in physiological and pathological ageing
  • Cognitive neurorehabilitation
  • Computational neuroscience and cognition
  • Conceptual representations
  • Decision making and reasoning
  • Development
  • Language
  • Learning/motivation
  • Human-centric machine intelligence
  • Memory
  • Motor control and action planning
  • Neurodevelopmental disorders
  • Neuroethics
  • Neuroimaging and brain connectivity
  • Neuromorphic photonic networks
  • Neurostimulation
  • Numerical cognition
  • Perception and attention
  • Vision

Program Objectives

The objectives of the Program are to develop the next generation of cognitive neuroscientists, equipped with the requisite multidisciplinary skills and expertise to push the frontiers of the mind/brain sciences and to succeed in the global research community. As of cycle 38 the PhD program requires obtaining English level B2 certification by the end of the 3rd year.

Accreditation

The Doctorate in Cognitive and Brain Sciences is accredited by ANVUR (Agenzia Nazionale di Valutazione del Sistema Universitario e della Ricerca) including up to cycle 41.
