Final examination

 

Procedures and soft deadlines for the Phd final exam (from the 29th cycle)

 

Submit thesis to the advisor by 10 August of the 3rd year.

Evaluation of the thesis provided by the advisor by 10 September.

Online application for admission to the final exam by mid-September (to be given to the Graduate Office).

Identification of the external referees of the Thesis by the Executive Committee by 15 September.

By 15 October of the final year, the Doctoral Course Committee evaluate the candidate’s three-year doctoral performance and deliberate the submission of the thesis for external review.

The doctoral thesis is sent to the external reviewers by 31 October.

Evaluation on the part of the external referees and their judgement on admission to the final exam by 15 December.

Submission of the PhD thesis to the members of the examining commission by 10 January.

Delivery of the thesis
At least 10 days before the final exam the PhD student deposits the thesis in electronic format (.pdf) via the web-archiving procedure to the link http://eprints-phd.biblio.unitn.it/ and delivers the authorization form to the Secretariat.

Final Examination Commission

The Panel is appointed by the Rector on the basis of the indications of the Doctoral Course Committee and consists of three members chosen from among professors and researchers in Italian or foreign institutes, specifically qualified in the fields covered by the thesis.
Doctoral Course Committee will nominate the members by 31 December.
The Panel may be extended by a maximum of two foreign experts from institutions and public and private bodies.
The Coordinator (through the Secretariat) will deliver the following to the Panel:
1. the judgment of the Doctoral Course Committee;
2. the thesis;
3. the PhD student report on the activities and publications;
4. the analytical judgment of the referees.
Within thirty days of the discussion and approval of the thesis, the University officially deposits it in the Ministerial database and the National Libraries in Rome and Florence.

Thesis Discussion
The public discussion of the thesis takes place in front of the Panel.
The date and place of examination will be given to PhD students via email by the University or may be published on the University website.
After the discussion, the Panel gives its assessment for each candidate.
The thesis can be approved or rejected. If it is rejected, the Phd student forfeits the PhD program. If approved, the Commission unanimously has the power to award the honors status when special scientific research results are present.

Agreements for thesis joint supervision
PhD students with an incoming supervised doctoral thesis follow the rules of the University of first registration or those established in the agreement for joint supervision if different.
PhD students with an outgoing supervised doctoral thesis follow the above rules or those established in the agreement for joint supervision if different.
