Procedures for the Phd final exam from the 29th series

 

Delivery of the thesis to the Tutor
Phd student deliver the advanced version of the thesis to the Tutor (and in case to the co-Turor) by August 10 of the last year.

Judgment of the Tutor
The Tutor (and in case the co-Tutor) send to the Doctoral Course Committee a written judgment on doctoral dissertation by September 10 of the last year.

Application for admission to the final exam
Phd student shall submit demand for final examinations with online procedure by the date announced by the University central offices.

Identification of the external referees and certification
The Executive Committee (delegated by the Doctoral Course Committee), identifies the external Referees by September 15 of the last year.
Referees must be at least three for each student (two standing and one substitute) and can perform that function for more then one candidate.
Referees are not paid. Once the assessment will receive a certificate of the activity.

External Referees requisites
Referees can be appointed among: 

  1. Italian and foreign academics external to the Doctoral Course Committee; 
  2. highly qualified non-academic experts, belonging to private or public research centres, in Italy or abroad.

The names of the Referees can be specified in the thesis cover.

Time of the external evaluation
Referees have 45 days for their evaluation. Any replacement of a Referee with the alternate takes place at the request of the supervisor / coordinator.

Judgment of the Doctoral Course Committee and admission to the external evaluation
By October 15 of the last year the Doctoral Course Committee assesses the activities and studies in the three years and expresses its view to be relevant to the assessment of the thesis by the Referees.

Sending of the thesis to the external Referees
By October 31 the Coordinator (through the Secretariat) send the definitive doctoral thesis in pdf format by e-mail to the Referees identified for each Phd student.

Sending of the evaluation by external Referees
The evalutation is sent by external Referees before December 15 by e-mail to the Coordinator who will give vision to the Phd student and the Tutor.

Admission to the Exam Final
Referees propose the admission of the Phd student to the final exam.
Referees may require minor corrections / additions that do not have effect on the time of the final exam.
Referees may propose the postponement of admission to the final exam if they require significant necessary additions or corrections. In this case Phd student has no more than six months, to review the thesis and respond to requests for integration or corrections.

Final Examination Commission
Jury is appointed by the Rector on the basis of the indications of the Doctoral Course Committee and consists of three members chosen among professors and researchers of Italian or foreign entities, specifically qualified in the fields covered by the thesis.
Doctoral Course Committee identify the members by December 31.
Jury may be extended by a maximum of two foreign experts, highly qualified belonging to institutions and public and private structures.
The Coordinator (through the Secretariat) deliver to the Jury:

  1. the judgment of the Doctoral Course Committee;
  2. the thesis;
  3. the PhD student report on the activities and publications;
  4. the analytical judgment of the Referees.

Deposit of the thesis
At least 10 days before the final exam Phd student deposits the thesis in electronic format (.pdf) via the web-archiving procedure to the link http://eprints-phd.biblio.unitn.it/ and delivery to the Secretariat the authorization form .
Within thirty days of discussion and approval of the thesis the University carries out the deposit according to law in the Ministerial database and in the National Libraries of Rome and Florence.

Thesis Discussion
The public discussion of the thesis takes place in front of the Jury.
The date and place of examination will be given to PhD students to their email by the University or may be published on the University website.
After the discussion the Jury give its assessment for each candidate.
The thesis can be approved or rejected. If it is rejected, Phd student forfeits the PhD program. If approved, the Commission unanimously, has the power to award the honors in presence of special scientific survey results.

Agreements for thesis under joint supervision
Phd students with incoming supervised doctoral thesis follow the rules of the University of first registration or those established in the agreement for joint supervision if different.
Phd students with outgoing supervised doctoral thesis follow the above rules, or those established in the agreement for joint supervision if different.
