Donate your 5x1000 to research into the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases
This year’s UniTrento 5x1000 campaign will raise donations for research on neural markers that can provide information on the early signs of neurodegenerative disorders before they appear (hence the name of the campaign #vorreisaperloprima, I want to know).
Increased life expectancy unfortunately has a disadvantage: that disorders associated with neuronal ageing also increase. Neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, force patients to face years of disability that ultimately lead to their death, and this has a huge psychological and economic impact on families and public healthcare. Diagnoses are often unspecific and made when the symptoms have already appeared.
What if we could know about these diseases before they appear?
A team of researchers from our University is at work to identify the signs of degenerating neuronal cells. These cells, like “neural spies”, circulate in the blood stream and signal a change in neural functioning. If we could speed up the diagnostic process for Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, ALS and other types of dementias associated with neuronal degeneration, and make it more precise, we could improve the quality of life of patients.
Your 5x1000 donation to the University of Trento will be used to fund the Neurospie project led by Manuela Basso, Paola Bellosta, Marta Biagioli and Michela Alessandra Denti. A team of biologists, biotechnologists and geneticists with a solid background in studies on neural degeneration and biomarkers.
The funds will be used to purchase equipment and consumable materials and to fund research positions to support the team’s efforts.
