Academic Year 2024/2025
Multifunctional, Metamaterials and Metastructures - M3 is a second level University Master's program proposed by the Departments of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering (DICAM) and Industrial Engineering (DII).
The Second Level Master's Program in Multifunctional, Metamaterials and Metastructures aims to offer the knowledge and transversal skills from a methodological point of view with respect to the definition of functionalities, modeling and optimization for the design of Multifunctional Metamaterials and Metastructures.
It also intends to offer the opportunity to gain experience from an application and experimental point of view, including through laboratory experiences gained in relation to advanced scenarios related to artificial and composite materials with innovative functionalities of industrial interest.
The language of the Master is English.
Educational goals
The main objective of the Master's program is to train professionals with skills in analysis, design, analytical and computer modeling, simulation and experimental validation in the field of Metamaterials and Multifunctional Metastructures.
Central educational objectives of the Master's program are:
- theoretical foundations of Metamaterials and Multifunctional Metastructures in the various relevant disciplines according to the physical phenomena of application interest;
- techniques of analysis of artificial materials and methods for their functional and logical characterization in analytical and mathematical terms;
- techniques for large-scale numerical modeling of complex multifunctional structures, including considering their multiphysical properties, through the use of multi-scale techniques on advanced computing architectures (HPC) and the integration of hybrid approaches based on the use of AI;
- fabrication, implementation, and experimental characterization in the laboratory from mechanical, electromagnetic, and structural perspectives of both static and reconfigurable multifunctional artificial materials by exploiting different physical mechanisms of reconfiguration;
- cross-cutting applications concerning multiple relevant scenarios, including the study of multifunctional meta-materials and meta-structures.
Recipients and entrance requirements
Applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications may submit a request for inclusion in the Master’s selection procedure:
- old-school degree (prior to DM 509/1999);
- master's degree, specialist or single-cycle master's degree;
- foreign qualification (Master degree) recognized as suitable according to current legislation.
Undergraduates who intend to achieve Master’s, specialist or single-cycle Master’s degree by the date of the ranking publication may also apply to participate in the Master. In case of successful completion of the selection, the undergraduates who confirm their enrollment will be admitted to participate in the Master "with reserve" until they obtain the title, which has to be obtained by the date of the ranking publication anyway. Once they have obtained the qualification, they must promptly notify it by writing an email to masters [at] unitn.it.
Enrollment in the Master's program is compatible with simultaneous enrollment in another course of study if the two courses comply with the compatibility requirements established by the MUR (M.D. 930/2022 articles 2 and 3).
Criteria for admission
Applications for participation in the Master's program should be submitted exclusively via online application by January 6, 2025 12:00 o’clock.
The selection consists of the evaluation by a special committee of the Curriculum Vitae et Studiorum and a motivational essay. Applicants will be scored according to the following criteria:
- Curriculum Vitae et studiorum: maximum 80 points
- Motivational letter (in English): maximum 20 points
Successful candidates who rank in the top 30 positions will be admitted to the Master's program, and will then be invited to confirm their enrollment by paying the first installment. The Master's program will be activated with a minimum of 10 enrollees.
Attendance
Classes will begin in January 2025 and will end in June 2025.
The Master's program includes 210 hours of face-to-face teaching.
An internship of 150 hours of project activity development is planned.
The final examination consists of the writing of a project developed under the supervision of a lecturer/expert that will be discussed in front of a special committee.
The Master's program requires compulsory attendance of all planned teaching activities, for a minimum of 70 percent of the frontal teaching hours.
Teaching activities will take place both in-person and online in synchronous and asynchronous modes.
Students who have regularly participated in the activities of the Master's program and have successfully passed the evaluation tests of the teaching and the final examination will be awarded, in December 2025, the University Master's Degree Level II in Multifunctional, Metamaterials and Metastructures (M3).
Registration fee and scholarships
The registration fee is €3,000.00 and must be paid in two installments, the first of €2,000.00 upon confirmation of the place (by January 21, 2025) and the second of €1.000,00 by June 30, 2025.
Possible scholarships will be proposed depending on the presence of sponsors.
