This is the University Choir, we sing for the University, with University members

More than 170 singers have already joined the choir, students, teachers, researchers and staff members.

This project we have created has both a musical and an educational purpose, that are equally important:

  • we want to offer music education in a social, open and inclusive way, and
  • provide the University of Trento with a polyphonic choir that represents it, with a quality repertoire that can meet the high standards of our university, funded by internal resources and managed by internal staff (all the singers and the conductor are from the university)

Thanks to this commitment and participation, our work is approved and appreciated at institutional level.

The choir promotes a path of personal growth in which its members are encouraged to organize themselves and to efficiently manage their personal time and resources, and offers supervision, counseling and mentoring,  through musical education and group work.

Our priority is therefore to give the participants an opportunity to improve themselves, but we also aim to offer excellent live performances.

How to participate

The choir is open to students, teachers, researchers, university staff and alumni.

It is important that singers attend rehearsals and sing in tune, but they are not required to have a musical background or skills in musical theory.

To join the choir, please write an email to: corale.polifonica [at]

You will receive an email with a questionnaire to fill and an we will set up an appointment for an interview and audition.

Choir practice takes place on Thursdays at the Auditorium of the Humanities department, from 20.00 to 21.45.

  • for musical matters: Marco Gozzi (choir conductor) marco.gozzi [at]
  • for organizational matters: Massimo Zortea (coordinator) massimo.zortea [at]

The choir was founded on 15 June 2016 on the initiative of Professor Marco Gozzi and Professor Massimo Zortea with the purpose of involving all University members in a musical and educational project.

They decided from the start to open the choir to the largest possible number of people, through an audition and without requesting particular skills on the part of the candidates: it is important that singers attend rehearsals and sing in tune.

The choir intends to serve the University providing a musical background to its official events (inauguration of the academic year, commencement ceremonies, etc.), and to participate in other types of events.

From 6 October 2016, rehearsals are on Thursday from 20.00 to 21.45 at the Auditorium of the Department of Humanities. The choir sections (soprano, contralto, tenor, bass) rehearse together, and the repertoire is varied and made up of sacred and secular music mainly from the 16th to 18th century.

An overview of other music experiences in Italian universities

The Corale Polifonica UniTrento is part of a very lively scene with other university choirs and orchestras.

Below you can find a list of these choirs and orchestras, coming from different parts of Italy. Most of them were founded between the end of the 1990s and the early 2000s. Every university choir offers a different repertoire: Gregorian chant, Renaissance and Baroque music, music from the classical music repertoire and contemporary music, including even jazz, gospel, funk... all genres are welcome!

In the wake of the interest expressed by the Conference of Italian University Rectors (CRUI), which in 2004 published a research study on student work in the arts within Italian universities, in October 2008 the universities of Modena e Reggio Emilia and Sassari signed the first national memorandum of understanding on choirs and orchestras (“Cori ed Orchestre Universitarie Italiane: sistemi di cultura e formazione alla musica pratica per i giovani universitari”), to promote and streamline the many and valuable experiences at national level. This led to the founding of a national federation of university choirs and orchestras, which today counts over 35 members, and in the first years of work has reached important achievements of scientific, cultural and social value. National Conferences have provided the opportunity for University choirs and orchestras to meet and share their experiences, and on these occasions ideas and projects were presented and discussed. All these have been included in the “Analisi dello stato attuale delle compagini musicali universitarie e loro proposta organizzativa e musicale” and in the draft guidelines for the creation of an online archive of university music.

The following list is taken form the book “I cori e le orchestre universitarie italiane: attualità e prospettive, I convegno nazionale - Modena e Reggio Emilia, 25 - 26 ottobre 2008”; atti e documentazioni, a cura di Antonella Coppi, Padova, CLEUP, 2010.
