The University Choir and Orchestra were established in 2016 as a cultural association on the initiative of Professor Marco Gozzi and Professor Massimo Zortea with the purpose of involving all University members in a music and education project.

The university community is invited to participate to share their passion for music in an inclusive and dynamic environment.

The two branches of the association, the Choir and the Orchestra, often work together to perform at cultural and institutional events.

How to participate

The Choir and Orchestra are open to students, faculty, researchers, university staff and alumni.

Singers are not required to have a musical background or skills in musical theory.

To join the Choir please send an email to corale.polifonica [at] object line: “mi interessa cantare”. You will be contacted for an audition.

To join the Orchestra please send an email to orchestra [at] object line: “mi interessa suonare”. Please write about the instrument you play and your music studies.

New members will be selected as needed.

Choir rehearsals are on Thursday from 20.00 to 21.45 at the Auditorium of the Paolo Prodi Building, home to the Department of Humanities; the Orchestra's rehearsals are on Thursday from 19.00 to 21.00 in room 130 at the Paolo Prodi Building.

The Choir's repertoire

The Choir's repertoire ranges from the Middle Ages to contemporary works, and includes traditional music and popular songs, covering all genres of music.

Over the years, the Choir has performed in many original projects at important cultural events, presenting little known works. For example: L’alba della modernità, with villanelle, villotte, laude and canti carnascialeschi from the fifteenth and sixteenth century; two colossal masses for eight voices by Orazio Benevoli, with the Choir of Trento (Corale Città di Trento) directed by maestro Roberto Gianotti; a performance with Teatro Sociale of Trento on the occasion of Feste Vigiliane 2019; a collection of choir music by Antonín Dvořák, performed during UNInCANTO, in Urbino, a festival of university choirs; the Concerto for Oboe and Strings in D minor by Alessandro Marcello (never performed before), with the choir playing the part of the instruments.

The Orchestra's repertoire

The Orchestra's repertoire ranges from Renaissance to contemporary music. The Orchestra performs on its own and with the University Choir. On occasion, the Orchestra collaborates with orchestras from other Universities and with non-academic organisations.

Members have the opportunity to participate in chamber groups created with the purpose of playing at specific events.

Are there any requirements?

It is important that singers and musicians attend rehearsals every week, from early October to the beginning of June, on Thursdays. For organizational matters and privacy issues, singers and musicians are required to join the cultural association as members.

How to become a member

For practical reasons, the University Choir and Orchestra are basically a volunteer organization. Members of the organization can join as auditing members, for up to one year, or as full members. In any case, candidates are required to submit their application to the Board of Directors (forms can be requested by email or at rehearsals).

New full members admitted by the Board of Directors are required to pay the membership fee (10 euro for 2020, for a year-long membership from 01/01/2020 to 31/12/2020), while auditing members are exempted from paying the fee but do not enjoy the benefits granted to full members.

Rights and duties of the members

Rights of full members include: participation in all concerts and events including the Choir and Orchestra; full voting rights, to vote and be voted in the organization's bodies; the right to receive music sheets and the concert folder with the organization's logo; free social dinner (usually at the beginning of the year, when new members are welcomed; in mid-June, on the Choir's anniversary; and after the most important events); participation in the annual spring trip.

Full membership includes insurance cover for any accidents that may occur at rehearsals and concerts, and a subscription to "Coralità" (the magazine of the Federation of Trentino Choirs).

Members are required to pay the annual membership fee, to attend the meetings of the organization's bodies, and to participate in its events.
