The CENSIS ranking 2019-2020 ranked the University of Trento in the top position, for the 4th time since 2010, in both the general ranking of state universities and in the ranking of 16 medium-sized universities (those with 10,000 to 20,000 students), with a final score of 97.
Universities (both state and private universities, divided by category based on their size, on a scale ranging from 66 to 110) and the university system are evaluated based on 6 sets of indicators: services, scholarships and other student aid, facilities, communication and digital services, internationalisation and graduate employability.
Compared to previous editions of the ranking, the University of Trento significantly improved its score in two indicators:
- facilities, which means the capacity of lecture rooms, libraries, laboratories, and student feedback on the appropriateness of rooms, libraries, computer facilities (97);
- international outlook, based on the percentage of foreign students on the total number of students; of students who went abroad for study or internship; of foreign students who visited UniTrento; funding for international mobility of students; English-taught degree programmes and double or joint degree programmes in the academic year 2017 2018 (104).

The evaluation of the different discipline areas of Italian state universities examines both undergraduate and graduate programmes and is based on 2 sets of indicators: student progress (number of students who continue from 1st to 2nd year; “on-track” students; number of students who graduate on time) and internationalisation (student mobility after graduation; number of universities involved in student mobility programmes; percentage of foreign students).
Four disciplinary areas - science, computer science and ICT, social and political science e psychology - offer the best undergraduate degrees. Confirming the results of the previous edition of the ranking, the five-year Master's programmes in law and psychology are in the first place.
