In this case, bring with you the European Health Insurance Card - EHIC or the S1 form issued by your national health service.

With these documents you are entitled to receive medical care and assistance in all EU countries and in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

If you have the EHIC card, you can consult any English-speaking doctor in Trento and Rovereto.

Make an appointment by requesting a consultation and ask for an invoice, as it might be reimbursed by your home country's health service. Be sure to bring the EHIC or the S1 form with you.

PhD students with EU citizenship

If you are a citizen of the EU and you are enrolled as a PhD student at UniTrento you can register with the Italian national health service (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale - SSN) if you:

  • have been residing in the Province of Trento for at least 1 year;
  • are not entitled to health insurance in your home country;
  • have paid the 700.00 euro fee or, in case you had an employmen income in the previous year, a fee based on that income.

In this case, you can take out private health insurance or join the Italian National Health Service (SSN) for a fee of 700.00 euro per year.

The membership is valid from the moment you purchase the insurance until 31 December of that year.

The amount will be higher if you had employment income for work in Italy or abroad in the previous year. For further information, contact the Provincial Healthcare Service (Azienda Provinciale per i Servizi Sanitari-APSS).

To join the National Health Service:

  • download the F24 form from the website of the Revenue Agency and fill it out according to the sample provided. Pay the required amount by presenting the form at a bank, post office, or a Revenue Agency office. Keep the payment receipt;
  • complete the registration form for the National Health Service (available below and at the offices of the Provincial Healthcare Service-APSS) according to the sample provided;
  • submit all the documents to the APSS in Trento (Viale Verona, Building C) or Rovereto (Via S. Giovanni Bosco) and bring with you your passport and the following documents:
    • residence permit or original receipt issued by the post office confirming the submission of the residence permit application;
    • certificate of enrolment at UniTrento (available in Esse3 for students, through the doctoral office for PhD students, or at the administrative offices for other categories).
    • copy of your Tax Code (which you will receive upon arrival in Trento).

Please note that the insurance is valid only within Italy and must be renewed or extended before expiration at the offices of APSS.

Family coverage

If you wish, you can extend the coverage of the National Health Service to your family members:

  • if you have already paid the 700.00 euro fee, you must pay an additional 1,300.00 euro via another F24 form;
  • if you have not yet joined, you can pay 2,000.00 euro.

To extend the National Health Service coverage to your family, read the information above.

If your family members have applied for a tourist visa and you started the family reunification procedure after your arrival in Italy, your health coverage can start after the expiration of the tourist visa or declaration of presence. Until then, they must be covered by private insurance taken out before departure.

If your family members have applied for a visa for family reasons and you have started the reunification procedure, the National Health Service coverage will start immediately.
