The Fulbright Program was established to promote study, research and teaching in Italy and the United States through scholarships for Italian and US citizens, so increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. In Italy, the programme has started in 1948 with the first agreement signed between the US Department of State and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the establishment of the Commission for cultural exchanges between Italy and the United States (The US-Italy Fulbright Commission).

The Fulbright Program allows Italian universities to invite U.S. professors and researchers to contribute to their teaching and research activities. Besides being funded by the Fulbright Commission, these possibilities have to be co-funded by the host university:

  • Fulbright Specialist Program offers the opportunity to Italian universities to ask for the collaboration of U.S. professors included in the Fulbright Specialist roster, for periods from 2 to 6 weeks for teaching and expert advice activities. Yearly call in autumn for mobilities between April and September.
Accommodation and food are provided and paid by host universities.

  • Fulbright Intercountry Program offers the opportunity to Italian universities to host U.S. professors and researchers in Italy and Europe for short periods to hold classes/seminars or to participate to conferences.
No deadline for this programme but available places and budget are limited.
Accommodation and food are provided and paid by host universities.

  • Fulbright Scholars offers the opportunity to Italian universities to host U.S. professors and researchers for teaching and research in all disciplines up to 4 months.
Yearly call in summer for mobilities between September and June.
Host universities provide equipment and workspace.

Furthermore, Italian Universities have the opportunity to establish Fulbright Chairs or Fulbright Lectureships, i.e. teaching and research positions of 3 months for U.S. professors/junior lecturers.
The Fulbright Commission deals with the recruiting in the USA, offers medical insurance and sponsors the visa issuing.
The host universities pay part of the scholarship, according to the profile.
