Educational Aims
The programme focuses on the specific theme of cultural exchanges between neighbouring areas in synchronic and diachronic (ancient/modern) perspectives. Exchange occurs in a range of contexts: social practices, habits and institutions, the arts and language. These aspects of cultural exchange are well known in anthropology but have only been partially explored in historical, philological, artistic and linguistic disciplines. The topic of this PhD programme is the further study and analysis of both material and symbolic exchanges that carry a conflict of cultures, which communicate over space or time and condition each other, producing transformations in their constituent characters.
The programme offers training on an annual basis to provide students with advanced skills in the specific field of intercultural exchanges as applied to linguistic, literary, philological, historical and art historical disciplines through a series of specific seminar activities. The seminars are proposed by professors from the University of Trento, University of Augsburg and Centre of Advanced Studies in the Humanities (CeASHum).
It is designed to further train researchers and scholars who are able to investigate how the transfer of specific characteristic elements takes place, from one culture to another. This research will be carried out using the most advanced tools available to the disciplines involved in the project, with further support from the five laboratories within CeASHum and with key support from the digital tools for humanists currently being developed by the Department.
Taught courses (the calendar and seminar titles will be specified in the course syllabus) are divided into the following:
- research methodology courses in the specific areas covered by the doctorate;
- cross-curricular courses in the various disciplines for research training and research communication;
- thematic and disciplinary seminars;
- seminars for the presentation and discussion of research projects as they progress;
- courses and seminars at other institutions in Italy or abroad;
- participation in conferences, seminars and workshops, in-house and at other institutions.
During the doctoral programme, PhD students are required to spend at least 6 months at the University of Augsburg and another 6 months at qualified foreign research institutions.
