1A - Experimental study of the high energy cosmic radiation with space-based missions (CUP E66E24000000001)

Contact: Prof. Ivan De Mitri [ivan.demitri [at] gssi.it]
Funds: NRRP, M4C2 Inv. 3.3, Innovative PhDs
Mobility abroad: compulsory, minimum 6 months
Periods in companies/research centres/public administrations: compulsory, minimum 6 months

The PhD student will be fully involved in the activities of the GSSI group for the experimental  study of cosmic radiation with space based detectors.
His/her research work will be focused on one (or more) activities carried on by the group, also depending on the student proposal.
These includes the study of galactic cosmic rays (CR) up to about hundreds TeV through the analysis of the data of the DAMPE mission, the GSSI being part of the international collaboration, and the R&D and detector optimization activities on future space missions for the study of CRs, gammas and neutrinos (also through dedicated Monte Carlo simulations), including: HERD (a CR detector that would reach few PeVs in energy range thanks to its innovative design and large acceptance), NUSES (a GSSI led project aiming at the validation of new technologies and observational approaches in the studies of ultra high energy CRs and neutrinos, but also low energy phenomena and interdisciplinary applications), Crystal Eye (for the detection and study of 0.1-30MeV photons emitted by transient or steady astrophysical sources).

(1B) Combined Data Analysis for Space Missions

Funding institution: Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati - SISSA Trieste
Doctoral site: Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati - SISSA Trieste
Contact: Prof. Carlo Baccigalupi [bacci [at] sissa.it]
Funds: Project funds
Mobility abroad: compulsory, minimum 6 months
Periods in companies/research centres/public administrations: optional

The scientific case for Probe Combination in Astrophysical and Cosmological observations implies the development of analysis techniques which are capable of combining the different datasets from space missions. The research project concerns these innovative features of the analysis and focuses on the spatial datasets involving stellar populations (GAIA), the distribution of Galaxies in Cosmology (Euclid, JWST), in conjunction with Cosmic Microwave Background (LiteBIRD) and Gravitational Wave Observatories (LISA).

(1C)     Universe exploration, from planets and exoplanets to stars and galaxies (CUP E66E24000210006)

Funding institution: University of Padua
Doctoral site: University of Padua
Contact: Prof. Giampaolo Piotto [giampaolo.piotto [at] unipd.it]
Funds: NRRP, M4C1 Inv. 4.1, Public Administration scholarships
Mobility abroad: compulsory, minimum 6 months
Periods in companies/research centres/public administrations: compulsory, minimum 6 months

The project will be on research programs related to the observational space exploration of the Universe, from data coming from satellites. ESA satellites that go from solar system probes, exoplanet search and characterization, Galactic kinematics, and exploration of the nearby and primordial Universe (at all wavelengths) are presently being collected and expected in the next years. An incredible amount of data that need to be elaborated and interpreted. A number of possible thesis related to space data exploitation with modern tools, including machine learning and quantum computing algorithms, under development, also within the thesis program, are offered.

(1D) Multi-wavelength observations of Galactic and extragalactic compact objects and transients

Funding institution: Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori - IUSS Pavia
Doctoral site: Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori - IUSS Pavia
Contact: Prof. Andrea Tiengo [andrea.tiengo [at] iusspavia.it]
Funds: Own funds
Mobility abroad: compulsory, minimum 6 months
Periods in companies/research centres/public administrations: optional

This position involves working on Galactic and extragalactic compact objects (white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes) and astrophysical transients. Specifically, the scholarship is intended to study cutting-edge fields such as magnetars, ultra-luminous X-ray sources, bursts from compact objects, fast radio bursts, gamma-ray bursts, and tidal disruption events. The successful candidate will work on the analysis of data at all wavelengths from space and ground-based instruments, on their interpretation, and on the optimization of observation and data mining strategies. It will also be possible to participate in the development of new observatories and instruments.
