The programme aims to train expert researchers in philosophical, historical, and cultural heritage studies considered in the dimension and historical-cultural horizon of European civilisation. The course provides students with a solid foundation in research across various disciplines and specialised skills, encouraging them to explore interdisciplinary methodologies and practices. With this training, doctoral candidates can attain, through diverse educational activities, complete maturity and autonomy in their research work and are equipped to contribute new and innovative insights to the department's areas of interest.

The programme offers three tracks:

Philosophy: the ancient, medieval, and modern roots of European philosophical thought, through both historical and theoretical methodologies.

History: the formation of European identities, from Greco-Roman civilisation to contemporary times, from a comparative perspective.

Cultural heritage: the European territory and its cultural heritage, which encompasses archaeological artefacts, art, music and performances, and documents.

To apply for the PhD programme, you must have:

  • a specialist or master's degree or a degree issued under the previous regulations;
  • a second-level diploma awarded by higher-education institutions for the fine arts, music and dance (AFAM, Alta Formazione Artistica e Musicale);
  • an equivalent academic qualification obtained abroad (master's degree) that allows admission to the PhD program in the education system or in the country of issue and that is considered suitable by the selection committee for the sole purpose of accessing the course.

For the 42nd cycle, the following positions are available:

  • 7 positions covered by three-year scholarships funded by the University of Trento;
  • 1 position covered by three-year scholarship funded by Fondazione Bruno Kessler on the topic "Travellers’ interactions in early modern Italy / Interazioni di viaggiatori nell’Italia dell'età moderna", Progetto TRAVEL' (FIS-2023-02909), CUP (C53C25000710001).
