Sustainability: Economics, Environment, Management and Society
COURSE SUMMARY
The Doctoral programme in Sustainability: Economics, Environment, Management and Society aims to train professionals with a strong interdisciplinary background who are capable of studying and implementing economic development models and models and tools for the management of natural resources —in view of economic, environmental, and social sustainability— for businesses, institutions, organisations, and profit and non-profit organisations.
These highly specialised professionals are trained through advanced methodological and specialised courses (primarily during the first year of the programme), study and research experiences at institutions and research centres in Italy and abroad, personalised in-depth study paths, and research activities focused on the preparation of the doctoral thesis.
The course in brief
OVERVIEW
- Risk and impact assessment related to phenomena such as climate change, overexploitation of natural resources, green technologies, and social innovation;
- Non-market economic valuation of ecosystem services in natural and agro-forestry systems to support sustainable management policies;
- Business models for the sustainable transition (ecological, digital, and social) in a context characterized by technological, organizational, and social innovation; sustainability measurement and reporting;
- Sustainable management of firms, organizations, and territories, with particular attention to tourism and cultural activities;
- Economic inequalities, women’s labor, and social sustainability;
- Impacts of the regulatory and legal framework on sustainable development;
- Sustainable development, sustainable cities, and regions.

To apply for the PhD programme, you must have:
- a specialist or master's degree or a degree issued under the previous regulations;
- a second-level diploma awarded by higher-education institutions for the fine arts, music and dance (AFAM, Alta Formazione Artistica e Musicale);
- an equivalent academic qualification obtained abroad (master's degree) that allows admission to the PhD program in the education system or in the country of issue and that is considered suitable by the selection committee for the sole purpose of accessing the course.
For the 42nd cycle 7 positions covered by three-year scholarships are available:
- 5 scholarships financed by the University of Trento
- 1 scholarship co-financed by Comune di Arco and the University of Trento, on the topic “Economic Valuation of Ecosystem Services in Olive Growing in the Upper Garda Area”;
- 1 scholarship co-financed by Cassa Rurale Alta Valsugana and the University of Trento, in memory of Massimiliano Giacomello, on the topic "Eutrophication of Multi-Use Lakes: An Economic Assessment of Environmental Costs and Benefits and Trade-offs for Sustainable Lake Management, with an Application to the Piné Plateau”.
One supernumerary position is available, reserved for applicants meeting the requirements specified in Art. 8 of the Call.
