The Fulbright Program was established to promote study, research and teaching in Italy and the United States through scholarships for Italian and US citizens, so increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. In Italy, the programme has started in 1948 with the first agreement signed between the US Department of State and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the establishment of the Commission for cultural exchanges between Italy and the United States (The US-Italy Fulbright Commission).
The Fulbright Program allows Italian universities to invite U.S. professors and researchers to contribute to their teaching and research activities. Besides being funded by the Fulbright Commission, these possibilities have to be co-funded by the host university (generally accommodation and food).
- Fulbright Specialist Program offers the opportunity to Italian universities to ask for the collaboration of U.S. professors included in the Fulbright specialist roster, for periods of 2 to 6 weeks for teaching and expert advice activities.
- Fulbright Intercountry Program offers the opportunity to Italian universities to host U.S. professors and researchers in Italy and Europe to held classes/seminars or to participate to conferences.
Furthermore, Italian Universities have the opportunity to establish Fulbright Lectureships, i.e. teaching and research positions for U.S. professors. The Fulbright Commission deals with the recruiting in the USA, offers medical insurance and sponsors the visa issuing.
