NaturAlbania

Period: September 2020 - September 2022
Funding provided by: AICS Tirana
Coordinators: VIS, CELIM, CESVI in partnership with NAPA (Albanian National Agency for Protected Areas) and other local institutions
Partners: Polytechnic of Tirana, University of Genoa

NaturAlbania is a two-year project with the general objective of contributing to the sustainable development of the environmental capital of Albania by strengthening the capacities of local institutions in the management of protected natural areas. The rapid socio-economic transition that the country has gone through in recent decades has resulted in a sharp increase in the exploitation of natural resources, poorly accompanied by monitoring of the effects on the environment. Among these, the reduction of forested areas, the illegal dumping of waste, as well as heavy exploitation of waterways and lack of regulation.

The project intends to contribute to environmental improvement in synergy with local authorities by strengthening their capacities and promoting sustainable development in tourism and local supply chains within protected natural areas and ecological corridors. UniTrento's contribution is divided into five main activities:

  • management and conservation of the Vjosa River corridor, one of the last great natural rivers in Europe
  • forest management support analysis
  • evaluation of ecosystem services in target protected areas and development of a national mapping pilot plan
  • support for the definition of coastal management plans in the Porto Palermo area
  • study of the coastal morphological dynamics of the protected area of Vjosa Narta to support the development of a management plan
