This research project stated in June 2001, thanks to a co-financing from the Provincia Autonoma di Trento. The aim of the research is to analyze what happens when the workplace is virtually shared. The research focuses on a technological innovation in its “experimental” stadium: the introduction of an electronic patient record in an oncology department of a large hospital. The aim of this project is both descriptive, interpretative as well as an applied,aiming to propose forms of knowledge management according with organizational environments in which knowledge constitutes the main productive resource. The research will offer a reflexive evaluation at the end of the first year of experimental usage of the technological prototype. It will therefore be a useful tool in order to map knowledge and practices developed and shared by the actors involved in the process.

Following the positive results of the first phase of the research, access has been granted to extend this piece of work to the observation and analysis of the teleradiology system of the Provincia of Trento, widely recognised as one of the most significant telemedicine system in Italy.
