Jakir Hossain

Jakir Hossain is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Bangladesh Studies, University of Rajshahi, and Chairman, Development Synergy Institute, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has been offered a post-doctoral teaching fellow position at the Centre for Global Workers' Rights, Pennsylvania State University, starting in August 2013. He received his Ph.D from the School of International Studies, University of Trento, Italy on April 2012 for his dissertation entitled “Economic Security for the Working Poor? Trade-Linked Labor Standards, Workers’ Rights, and the Politics of Representation of Bangladesh’s garment Workers.” 

He was earlier educated in the universities of London South Bank, London School of Economics, and Carleton in Development Studies, Social Policy and Planning in Developing Countries, and Trade Policy and Commercial Diplomacy respectively.

Dr. Hossain has been a Visiting Fellow at the School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Cornell University, USA. He has taught Bangladesh Development Perspectives, Research Frame and Methodology Scale, Participatory Research Methods, Socioeconomic Studies of Bangladesh at the Institute of Bangladesh Studies, University of Rajshahi and at the Institute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka. He has contributed to research programs on Trade Policy Analysis, Bangladesh Public Policy Watch, Primary Education Policy Watch and Listening to People Living in Poverty at UnnayanOnneshan, Bangladesh. He worked as Research Associate at the Centre for Policy Dialogue, Bangladesh and was involved in research programs on Trade Policy and Multilateral Trading System, Population and Sustainable Development, and Independent Review of Bangladesh's Development. He has written articles, policy papers, and briefs on labor rights, decent work, social dialogue, multilateral trading regime, poverty and injustice, skill formation and learning, and education and development. He has been the keynote speaker in different national and regional seminars in Bangladesh as well as in international conferences in USA, Canada, Italy, Germany, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand and Hong Kong.
