EU citizens do not need a visa to study in Italy.
Non-EU students must apply for a visa through the Italian diplomatic representation in their home country after registering on Universitaly.
The visa procedure may vary slightly depending on the Embassy or Consulate, but all of them require information about the purpose and duration of your stay, as well as proof of sufficient financial means and accommodation.
Please check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website to confirm whether you need a visa, depending on the duration and reason for your stay.
Once you have arrived in Italy, to validate your stay, you must submit your residence permit application to the Immigration Office within 8 working days of your arrival.
Non-EU citizens residing in another EU country for study do not need a visa to study at UniTrento, provided their stay is under 360 days and their EU residence permit is valid for the entire period. They must submit a declaration of presence to the Immigration Office within 8 working days of arrival.
If your stay at UniTrento lasts less than 90 days you have to request a type C visa (= "short duration") to enter Italy.
Type C visa can either be:
- National visa: valid only for Italy if issued by an Italian Embassy or Consulate. It does not allow you to travel to other Schengen countries;
- Schengen visa: valid for Italy and also for other Schengen countries.
You should also confirm directly with the Embassy or Consulate about the specific documents you need to submit.
The International Mobility Office will provide you with an invitation letter, which must be submitted to the nearest Italian Embassy or Consulate to obtain your visa.
Please note that a visa only allows you to enter Italy. After arrival, you must submit a declaration of presence to the Immigration Office within 8 working days to validate your stay.
The visa only allows you to enter Italy. If your stay exceeds seven days and your entry into Italy was through another Schengen Area country, you must go to the Immigration Office within 8 days of your entry into Italy to make a declaration of presence.
If your stay at UniTrento is longer than 90 days you have to request a type D visa (= "long duration") to enter Italy.
Type D visa can either be:
- Single entry: it does not allow you to re-enter Italy or to travel in other Schengen countries;
- Multi entry: allows to circulate in other Schengen countries for up to 90 days every six-months.
The Embassy will require proof of:
- the University admission letter (provided by the University of Trento);
- adequate economic means (at least €500/month);
- accommodation in Italy;
- health insurance;
- sufficient funds for your return trip (e.g., return ticket);
Additional documents may be requested by the Embassy or Consulate. Always confirm the specific requirements by contacting the nearest Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country.
If you are coming to UniTrento to enroll in a degree program (Bachelor's or Master's) you should first complete the mandatory pre-enrollment step at the closest Italian Embassy or Consulate in your Country before asking for a visa. In this case, student visas are issued starting from the second half of August.
If you have been selected for a "borsa di studio a progetto" (research activity on a specific topic) you will be asked to apply for a scientific research visa.
The Ufficio Accoglienza Personale will support you on this specific visa ([email protected]).
