The lapse of student status means the loss of student status, which prevents students from continuing their academic career.
This generally occurs when exams are not taken for a specific period of time, according to different conditions and terms based on the regulations of the study program and always regardless of the payment of university fees.
DM 270/04 courses of study
If you are enrolled on a course of study activated under the rules of DM 270/04, your status will lapse if:
- you do not obtain at least a quarter of the credits required for the whole programme in a number of academic years equal to the normal duration of the course in which you are enrolled:
- for a bachelor’s degree, 45 credits within the three academic years of the duration of the course
- for a master’s degree, 30 credits within the 2 academic years of the duration of the course
- for the single-cycle master’s degrees in Law and Civil Engineering-Architecture, 75 credits within the 5 academic years of the duration of the course
- for a single-cycle master’s in Medicine, 90 credits within the 6 academic years of the duration of the course
- for part-time courses, a quarter of the credits required within the academic years of the normal duration of the part-time course are required.
- you do not pass at least one exam in a 36 month period
For condition 1, for example:
- if you enrolled on a degree course on 15 September 2021, this will lapse on 31 March 2025 if you have not obtained at least 45 credits by this date;
- if you enrolled on a master’s course on 15 September 2023, this will lapse on 31 March 2026 if you have not obtained at least 30 credits by this date;
- if you enrolled on a single-cycle master’s degree course in Law or Civil Engineering-Architecture on 15 September 2021, this will lapse on 31 March 2027 if you have not obtained at least 75 credits by this date;
- if you enrolled on a single-cycle master’s degree course in Medicine on 15 September 2021, this will lapse on 31 March 2028 if you have not obtained at least 90 credits by this date;
For condition 2, for example, if you passed the last exam on 25 February 2020, your enrolment will lapse if you have not passed any other exams by 25 February 2023.
For the purposes of a lapse of student status, exams recognized from previous careers are not counted, instead the credits recognized and acquired during the present career are valid.
Furthermore, any period of suspension will not be counted for the purposes of a lapse of student status.
If you have taken and passed all the exams and must still take the final exam, your status will not lapse.
Once a lapse has been identified, the career will be automatically terminated.
Once your career has lapsed, if you wish to resume your studies, contact Student Support for information about times and procedures for enrolment.
DM 509/99 courses of study
If you are enrolled on a course of study activated under the rules of DM 509/99, your status will lapse if 6 academic years pass in which you do not pass at least one exam.
If you have taken and passed all the exams and you still have to take the final exam, your status will not lapse.
Once a lapse has been identified, the career will be automatically terminated.
Once your career has lapsed, if you wish to resume your studies, contact the Student Support office for information about times and procedures for enrolment.
Pre-reform courses of study
If you are enrolled in a course activated under the pre-reform system, your career lapses if eight academic years have passed since you took the last exam.
Your status will not lapse if:
- you have passed all the exams and only need to pass the degree or diploma exam, which you can access regardless of the time elapsed since the last exam (subject to renewal of registration);
- you present to the Student Support office of your department a declaration of the exams taken, even with a negative result
Careers which require only the degree thesis to be completed, will not lapse.
Once a lapse has been identified, the career will be automatically terminated.
Once your career has lapsed, if you wish to resume your studies, contact the Student Support office for information about times and procedures for enrolment.
