Scholars at Risk - SAR is an international network of academic institutions founded in 1999 at the University of Chicago with the goal of promoting academic freedom and protecting scholars whose lives are in danger, or whose research and teaching work is severely compromised. The two headquarters are SAR-US at New York University and SAR-Europe at Maynooth University (Ireland).
The network includes more than 640 universities, research institutes and associations in 49 countries, mainly the United States, Canada and Europe. The extent of the network confirms the academia's interest and support for the advocacy of hundreds of scholars globally through specific protection programs, awareness-raising initiatives and training programs on the importance of academic freedom and the consequences of its violation.
SAR helps threatened scholars by supporting the creation of temporary research and teaching positions at higher education institutions around the world. In addition, SAR provides advisory services to network institutions involved in hosting threatened scholars as well as potential members who wish to host or support threatened scholars.
With the Advocacy program, SAR promotes academic freedom as a human right, asking for greater protections; through Advocacy Seminars, it offers male and female students the opportunity to develop human rights research and advocacy skills; With the Academic Freedom Monitoring Project and annual Free to Think reports, investigate and report attacks on research freedom to raise awareness, generate support and increase protection for the academic community.
Research and training opportunities offered by SAR include handbooks, courses and workshops, conferences, and scholarships, which engage faculty, students, and members of the university and non-university community in the discussion on academic freedom globally and regionally.
