PhD students may request suspension from the course in the event of:

  • maternity or paternity;
  • serious and certified illness;
  • attendance of the active training internship related to teacher training.

For serious and certified personal reasons other than those indicated above, the request for suspension must be authorised by the Teaching Board to whom the request must be addressed. The Suspension Request Form, accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation, must be sent to the PhD Office of the campus concerned.

A suspension may not be requested retroactively.

During the period of the suspension, payment of the scholarship is frozen and deferred for the effective duration of the suspension. No work or training activity related to the PhD course may be carried out (e.g. missions abroad associated with the PhD course).

End of the suspension
Testo

At the end of the suspension, you must send a declaration of resumption of your attendance of the course (the "Declaration of return after suspension"), also signed by the coordinator of the PhD Course, to the PhD Office of the campus concerned.

You are required to make up the suspension period. Therefore, all administrative deadlines will be extended for a period equal to the duration of the suspension.

Suspension due to maternity (mandatory and optional)
Testo

According to the provisions of Legislative Decree 151/2001, Law no. 296/2006 (financial law 2007) and the Decree of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of 12 July, 2007, in the event of maternity, attendance of the PhD activities is interrupted for a mandatory period of 5 months:

  • 2 months before the expected date of delivery and 3 months after (2+3);
    or 1 month before the expected date of delivery and 4 months after (1+4),
  • with a medical certificate for the 8th month;
  • or exclusively after the birth, for a maximum of 5 months thereafter (0+5).

At least 30 days before the start of the mandatory suspension period, the PhD student must send a request to the Coordinator of the PhD Course and, for reference, to the PhD Office of the campus concerned.

The request must be accompanied by a medical certificate attesting the expected date of birth. Furthermore, within 15 days of the birth, the student must send a substitute declaration pursuant to art. 46, Presidential Decree 28 December 2000, no. 445, which confirms the actual date of birth.

If the PhD student wishes to postpone the mandatory leave to the month before the expected date of delivery, or to take advantage of the 5 months following delivery, they must submit a request to the PhD Office of the campus concerned by the end of the 7th month of pregnancy. The request must be accompanied by:

a certificate from the gynecologist attesting that extension of attendance until the 8th month, or until the date of delivery, does not compromise the health of the mother and the unborn child. If the gynecologist is not affiliated with the SSN, it is necessary to contact the ASL to obtain a certification of suitability to attend the PhD activities;

if the PhD student is subject to health surveillance due to the "risk profile" linked to their research, it is also necessary to attach the certificate from the University Doctor.

If the PhD student is already subject to health surveillance, the appointment with the University Doctor must be scheduled in the week before the end of the seventh month of pregnancy. It is advisable to book the appointment in advance by contacting the Health Surveillance Office (email: [email protected]).

It is possible to request a further period of optional suspension of seven months, starting from the end of the mandatory abstention period.

The request must be sent to the Coordinator of the PhD Course, to the PhD secretariat and a copy to the PhD Office of the campus concerned, at least 15 days before the end of the mandatory abstention. To take advantage of this period, it is necessary to submit the “Optional Maternity Communication” form to the PhD secretariat and a copy to the PhD Office of the campus concerned.
