Lines of action

Solidarity with scholars at risk is a fundamental element of academic freedom and is central to the University of Trento's third mission and internationalization programs.

Since 2019, the University of Trento has welcomed scholars at risk through the publication of calls for dedicated research grants, enabling them to continue their research in a safe environment and fostering their inclusion in the local, national and international academic community. The projects have received support by external entities, including the Autonomous Province of Trento, the CARITRO Foundation and the Municipality of Rovereto.

Each scholar accepted within the SAR project is supported by the person responsible for SAR activities within the academic structure where he or she is working, and a scientific mentor, identified by affinity of disciplinary and research interest.

The University of Trento does not issue risk certifications for scholars, but relies in this regard on competent international organizations, such as Scholars at Risk - SAR, Council for At-Risk Academics - CARA and Scholar Rescue Fund - SRF.

The University of Trento promotes various advocacy initiatives to raise awareness about academic freedom among institutions and civil society, joining national and international campaigns and thus giving visibility to situations in which academic freedom is breached and to the rights of the scholars involved.

In order to raise awareness on the need to protect academic freedom, the University of Trento promotes the participation of the student community in Student Advocacy Seminars, seminars organized by universities that are member of the SAR network, with the support of SAR International, to provide specific skills in advocacy, leadership and research in the area of human rights. Students are directly involved in the analysis of a case study concerning endangered scholars and in the subsequent development of an advocacy campaign on their behalf.
