Once you have passed the selection process for the doctoral programme, you will have to formalise your enrolment by the deadlines indicated in the call for admission.
If you do not complete your enrolment by the deadlines indicated in the call, you will be considered to have withdrawn.
To enroll in a PhD programme:
- fill in the online application with all the data requested, including the section on tax and social security data. Use the credentials (username and password) you used when you submitted your application for admission;
- upload the following documents:
a copy of your identity card or passport;
the application form (generated by the system in pdf format) - pay the provincial tuition fee ("tassa provinciale per il diritto allo studio"), if you are not entitled to a fee waiver, and the tax stamp through the PagoPA system: 166,00 euros
Once you have enrolled, the PhD Course Support Division (Divisione supporto corsi di dottorato) for your programme will ask you to provide a photo of yourself for recognition purposes in the framework of your university career and to have access to certain services.
Remember that:
- if you have qualified for a place with a scholarship, you must register with the INPS "gestione separata" (a social security contribution system);
- if you do not have Italian citizenship you must complete the procedure to obtain a Residence Permit.
You must upload a scanned copy of your valid residence permit or residence card to Esse3Web by 21 November 2025.
If your residence permit has expired at the time of submitting your PhD application, you must upload the receipt of the renewal request issued by the Questura of Trento. You will then be required to upload the actual residence permit as soon as you receive it, and no later than 6 months after your arrival in Italy.
To access Esse3Web, log in with your university credentials. Once logged in, from the menu on the left-hand side of the page, select "Student Office - Residence Permit".
Successful applicants with a qualification that has not been awarded in Italy must present to the Divisione Supporto Corsi di Dottorato e Alta Formazione by the deadline indicated in the call, in advance by email:
- the academic diploma of the Master degree (Master of Science/Arts or equivalent) in the original or certified copy, together with the Academic Transcript of Records, possible official translations, legalized or with an apostille affixed (please carefully verify the fulfillment of the requirements set by the issuing country of the title);
and one of the following documents:
- Diploma Supplement;
- Declaration of Value issued by the Italian Embassy in the country where the qualification was awarded;
- the Rector's Decree of "Equivalence-academic recognition of the title";
- Statement of comparability of foreign university qualifications issued by the ENIC-NARIC Center in Italy (CIMEA) that contains all the information necessary for the assessment of the qualification.
Certificates must be legalized by the Italian Embassy or, if the country is a signatory of the Hague Convention (1961), they must have the Apostille. Check the competent authorities for each country.
In case the Diploma Supplement, or the Declaration of Value, or the Statement of comparability are not available by the deadline indicated in the call, admitted applicants must deliver a document showing that they asked the University, the Italian diplomatic or consular representations, or the ENIC-NARIC center for the documents to be issued.
Admission to the Doctoral Programme for successful candidates who do not provide the required above-mentioned documents by the deadline indicated on the call will be “conditional”, and the applicants will be excluded from the Doctoral Programme if:
- they do not deliver the documents within 6 months from the starting date of the programme;
- upon verification, their title is not in compliance with the requirements of the call.
The following are exempt from this payment:
- foreign PhD students who are recipients of Italian government scholarships (e.g. MIUR, MAE, etc.). NB: a UniTrento scholarship is not among those awarded by the government.
- PhD students with a recognized disability equal to or greater than 66%
- PhD students and recipients of Opera Universitaria scholarships
- PhD students eligible for Opera Universitaria scholarships but who are not receiving one due to lack of resources.
No refunds of Right to University Study fees paid for enrolment in a PhD are allowed (except for payments made in error or paid unnecessarily).
Withdrawal from enrolment
If you do not intend to enrol, we ask you to notify us as soon as possible by completing the “Withdrawal from enrolment declaration” and emailing it to the PhD Course Support Division responsible for your programme.
