“Digitalization” is a key word in the new 2021-2027 Erasmus+ programme. The  European Student Card Initiative is a fundamental component of the Digital Education Plan and aims to simplify the administrative processes associated with student mobility.

The commitment to implementing the European Student Card Initiative is part of the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE).

The aim is to facilitate mobility in Europe through the secure and speedy exchange of documents and data using the  Erasmus Without Paper (EWP) platform in order to manage the administrative procedures more efficiently, both for those participating, and the International Relations Offices.

EWP is the point of access for the higher education institutes. Each institute can access the EWP through the Erasmus+ Dashboard provided by the European Commision, through a third-party provider or through an in-house system.

The Erasmus+ Mobile App provides a single point of access for students to manage all the phases of their mobility,  thanks to the digitalization of the administrative procedures.

As part of this process, each student is assigned a European Student Identifier (ESI): a unique digital identifier (ID) which is valid at all European educational institutes. It allows students to use a single identifier to access digital services throughout Europe.

Each institute participating in the Erasmus programme nominates a Digital Officer who is responsible for implementing the European Student Card.

The Digital Officer at UniTrento is Mauro Ferrari ([email protected]), who is the manager of the Emerging Solutions Office, and who works with colleagues from the international services, and teaching and IT services to contribute to the concrete realisation of the digital objectives.

The University of Trento is a member of the national working group of universities (led by the University of Padova) which are testing and will use the Esse3 platform for some aspects of digitalization.

UniTrento is connected to the EWP network in two ways:

  • with the Erasmus+ Dashboard for the exchange of inter-institutional agreements (list of compatible providers for the exchange of agreements)
  • with the Esse3 platform for the exchange of Online Learning Agreement (OLA). The system is currently being tested. Until the system is fully operational, the Dashboard is being used also for OLAs.

To search for UniTrento in the EWP system, use the code schach unitn.it.

All UniTrento students taking part in the Erasmus programme are assigned an ESI, and are invited to download and use the ER+ app.

The agreements between candidates and institutes are all signed digitally:
