The tax code is a personal identification code based on your personal data. You need it to pay monthly rent, open a bank account, register with the National Health Service, get a mobile phone SIM card, and for many other services.
The tax code is issued once in your lifetime by the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Tax Agency) and is the only legally valid one.
The University of Trento provides international students with their tax code when they arrive.
