To participate in international study mobility programmes (long-term Erasmus+, Bilateral Agreements, Double Degree and Double Title programmes), you must demonstrate that you meet the language proficiency level required by the host institution. Meeting this requirement is essential to attend classes successfully, integrate into the academic environment and ensure that your application is eligible for selection.
The mobility calls for the 2027–28 academic year are expected to open in mid-November 2026 and close in mid-January 2027. By the application deadline, you must be able to demonstrate that you meet the required language proficiency through one of the methods described below.
On the Going abroad – For study webpage, you can explore the available mobility programmes and check the language requirements for each destination by consulting the relevant call for applications and its annexes.
How to prepare
While waiting for the publication of the new calls, you can consult last year’s calls to check the language requirements for your preferred destination. Please note that the language requirement indicated in the UniTrento mobility calls is necessary for selection by UniTrento but may not be sufficient for admission to the host institution. The partner university may require a higher language level or a specific international language certificate.
How to demonstrate that you meet the language requirements
You can demonstrate the required level of language proficiency in one of the following ways:
- Hold an international language certificate recognised by the University Language Centre (CLA) for international mobility. In this case, visit the page Do you have a language certification? and carefully check that your certificate is valid and meets the minimum score required for each language skill.
- Have passed and registered in Esse3 a university language examination (e.g. French Language B2) at the level required by your destination, including assessment of all four language skills (reading, listening, writing and speaking). Language examinations completed during previous degree programmes at UniTrento or other universities are also accepted. If the examination was taken at another university, you must submit a Transcript of Records or a syllabus indicating the language level achieved and confirming assessment of all four skills.
- Have obtained a secondary school or university qualification in a country where the official language of instruction is the language required by your destination. Alternatively, you must have completed an entire course of study in that language (for example, upper secondary school). A single year of study abroad is not considered sufficient.
- Be a native speaker of the language required by your destination. You may demonstrate this by submitting a self-declaration stating that you completed your entire primary and secondary education in that language.
- Have passed a previous CLA language test for international mobility, taken no more than five years ago and by the end of the 2023–24 academic year, specifically designed for mobility applicants and assessing all four language skills.
In addition, the language requirement is considered fulfilled in the following cases:
- English: if you are enrolled in a degree programme taught in English and the admission language requirement for your programme is equal to or higher than the level required by your destination.
- Portuguese, Catalan and Serbian: if you hold a certificate issued by a university or recognised institution in a Portuguese-, Catalan- or Serbian-speaking country.
- Double Title programmes offered by the Faculty of Law and Bilateral Agreements: if you hold the specific international language certificate explicitly required by your chosen destination, even if it differs from those recognised by the CLA.
- Department of Economics and Management: if you have passed the final examination of the extracurricular course English B2/a (Business English).
- German – Faculty of Law: if you have passed the Legal German examination at B1 level or above, provided you do not already hold another valid language qualification.
If you do not have a valid language qualification
If you do not already hold one of the qualifications listed above, you may register a CLA language test in your study plan for English, French, Spanish or German, and take the examination during the regular CLA examination sessions.
In accordance with your degree programme regulations, you may register up to two different language tests (e.g. English B2 and French B1). Depending on your degree programme, these may be included either as curricular activities or as extra activities carrying 0 ECTS credits. To submit the request, you must already have met the language requirement established by your degree programme.
How to register the language test in your study plan
You may register the language test independently through Esse3 during the study plan modification periods.
If you are unable to modify your study plan in Esse3, you may submit an online Request to register a language test in your academic record for the 2027–28 international mobility calls. Please make sure to select the correct online form according to your degree programme and campus.
The deadline for submitting the online request is 1 December 2026 at 12:00 noon.
Once your request has been approved, the relevant Student Support Service will register the language test in your academic record.
Taking the language test
After the Student Support Service has registered the language test in your academic record, you must enrol independently in one of the regular CLA examination sessions through the CLA online system.
The examinations have the same format and regulations as the standard CLA language tests.
If you pass the examination, the result will be recorded in your academic record. If you do not pass the test by the application deadlines for the 2027–28 mobility calls, the activity will be removed from your academic record.
Exceptions
- Portuguese language: tests cannot be added to your academic record. To receive information about enrollment procedures and examination dates, contact [email protected], copying the relevant Mobility Office. Although the test will not appear in your study plan, if you pass it, it will be considered valid for participation in the mobility calls.
- Catalan and Serbian: the CLA does not offer standard language tests in these languages.
