The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation provides some useful tools to plan for a safe trip:

  • Viaggiare sicuri is a key resource for people travelling abroad. By selecting your destination, you can check the documents and visas required for entry, any mandatory or recommended vaccinations, but also find information on ongoing emergencies and crisis situations.
  • Dove siamo nel mondo allows you to share information about your trip with the Crisis Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This will make it easier to contact you in an emergency.

Viaggiare sicuri is also available as an app for smartphones and tablets, integrating the services of ViaggiareSicuri.it and DovesiamoNelMondo.it.

You need a valid identity document to travel abroad. This means that:

  • it must not have expired;
  • it must allow you to enter the country of destination.

Here are some of the documents you may need:

  • Identity card: valid to travel to Schengen Area countries.
  • Passport: make sure it is valid for the entire duration of your trip, including your return trip, or arrange to renew it in time. Please note that some countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond the date of travel. For example, if you plan to return on 10 January, your passport must not expire before 10 July.
  • Visa: some countries require a visa. To obtain a visa, contact the embassy or consulate of your destination country. To travel to the United States, you can apply for a visa online. If you need to submit a letter of invitation to an embassy or consulate, contact the International Mobility Office responsible for your exchange.

Always take a photo or bring with you a photocopy of your documents – they will be useful if you lose them during your stay.

If you are travelling to a country of the European Union, bring your Italian health card with you. On the back of the card you can find the European Health Insurance Card details, for assistance in EU and EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland).

If you are travelling to a country outside the European Union, consider buying private health insurance.

Remember to bring any essential medicines with you if you think you may need them.
