International mobility calls for studying abroad Erasmus, Bilateral Agreement, Double Degree require to assess the knowledge of the foreign language at the level specified by the host institution, otherwise you won’t be eligible for that programme. The language requirement is not merely a formality, but the minimum competence necessary to follow lessons and integrate fully.

This requirement must already be possessed by the deadline of the call for application, via the options listed below. Since the calls will open at the beginning of December 2025 and will close before the end of January 2026, we suggest that you immediately check the language level required by the foreign destinations at “Going abroad- for study” page, selecting the program you wish to apply for, and carefully consulting the destination tables from the previous year’s calls for applications.

How can I prove that I meet the language requirement?

Testo

You can prove to satisfy the language requirement in one of the following ways:

  • International Certifications: you possess one of the international certifications valid for international mobility, as established by the University Language Center (CLA) for each language. To be sure, check the page "Do you have a certificate?
Always check the notes, the period of validity, and the minimum scores required for each single skill.

  • Academic Exam: you have registered in your Esse3 booklet a language activity with verification of the four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking (i.e. “Lingua Francese B2”) that has the same level of the mobility language level required. This is valid for your current career in UniTrento, and for your previous career on UniTrento or in another University. In the case of an activity registered at another university, you will have to upload in your mobility application the transcript of records showing the four language skills accomplished.

  • Education qualification or degree: a secondary education qualification or a university degree obtained in a country where the official language is the one required; or having completed an entire programme of study in the language required for the mobility, i.e. during high school. Having completed only one year abroad is not considered sufficient to demonstrate the language requirement.

  • Native Speaker: being a native speaker of the language required for the destination.

  • Having passed a University Language Center exam: having passed one of the CLA language tests reserved for international mobility with verification of the four language skills in one of the extraordinary sessions organized by the CLA in the past for mobility calls up to and including the a.y. 2023-2024.

Special Cases

  • English only: being enrolled in a study programme entirely taught in English, as far as the English level required by the destination is equal or lower than the English level required for the admission to the study programme.
  • Portuguese, Catalan, Serbian only: having a certification issued by a university and/or an institution from a Portuguese, Catalan, or Serbian-speaking country.
  • Department Faculty of Law, Double Degree and Bilateral Agreements calls only: you must possess an international certification among those that may be required by the destination of interest.
  • Department of Economics and Management: Having passed the final exam of the extracurricular English course (B2 level - see Corsi di lingua inglese al DEM | Dipartimento di Economia e Management)
  • German requirement for the Department Faculty of Law only: Having passed the legal German exam at least at B1 level (if no other certification is possessed).

What can I do if I don't fall into any of these cases?

Testo

If you do not already possess a valid proof among those previously listed, you can include the language test for the level you wish to obtain in your Esse3 booklet (“libretto”), to sit the exam during the University Language Center (CLA) standard sessions.

The available languages are English, French, Spanish, and German.

In compliance with the Didactic Regulations of your study programme, you can include a maximum of two different language tests in your booklet (i.e., English B2 and French B1). Depending on your  study programme, the tests may be included as a curricular activity or as an extra activity - in this case for 0 ECTS/CFU. To be eligible to apply, you must have already passed the level required by your course of study.

How to include the CLA language test in your Esse3 booklet:

  • During the opening time of the windows for modifying the study plan in Esse3;
  • Only if it is no longer possible to modify the study plan, through the dedicated online applications, checking the correct name based on your course of study and reference campus. The application period will close on December 17, 2025, at 12:00 pm. Once verified by the offices, the CLA language test will be inserted in your booklet.

How to sit the exam:

Once the activity has been included in your Esse3 booklet by Student Support Office, you will have to register on your own for the CLA's standard sessions through test platform. The structure and rules of the tests are identical to those of the CLA's standard tests. Passing the test will be recorded in your Esse3 booklet. The activity will be removed if it won’t be passed by the application deadlines for the a.y. 2026/27 mobility calls.

Important Exceptions:

  • Portuguese: The test cannot be included in your transcript. You must write to [email protected], copying the reference Mobility Office, to receive instructions on registration and dates. The Portuguese language test cannot be recorded in the study plan, but if passed, it will be considered valid for participation in international mobility calls.
  • Catalan and Serbian: Standard tests are not offered by the CLA.
