The Italy section of Scholars at Risk (SAR) was established in 2019 following the initiative of the University of Padua and the University of Trento. The section has more than 30 members among universities and research institutes throughout Italy.
Members of SAR Italy actively collaborate to protect scholars at risk and defend academic freedom through the development of:
- strategies to protect endangered scholars and scholars through the exchange of best practices and dialogue with institutions and civil society to increase the sustainability of projects;
- channels of communication and collaboration with other sections or associations in Europe, the United States and Canada, such as Council for At-Risk Academics - CARA (UK), Scholar Rescue Fund (US), New University in Exile Consortium (US), or Threatened Scholars Integration Initiative (OSUN-TSI).
SAR Italy organizes:
- conferences, seminars, or summer and winter schools to inform the academic community, institutions, and civil society about the violation of university autonomy and academic freedom around the world;
- fundraising initiatives to establish research grants or contracts dedicated to endangered scholars;
- training activities to develop expertise within universities or research institutions on the reception and inclusion of endangered scholars in the academic community.
Membership of the Italy section also enables participation in international monitoring projects on academic freedom, to develop strategies on reception and inclusion at the European level.
